MP3 download question

What's the risk of downloading mp3s from software like Bearshare in this day and age?

Anyone got any insight to this stuff?

I've never been a hug downloader of free music but lately I've been dabbling.

Veb uses bearshare and it seems to work fine. He hasn't complained about spyware or viruses at all. I've noticed if you used the ones that have nominal fee's, those seem to be the less likely to fuck your system up. But imagining your computer before you mess with file sharing is always a safe bet.

I don't mean the quality of the mp3s. I mean is some jerk lawyer gonna end up sending me a letter scolding me for downloading mp3s casually?

Imagining = imaging and no bearshare is a legal, you paid for this download, mp3 file sharing company. As far as I can tell.

er..not paying for the downloads..just wondering what the legal dangers are.

Legal dangers of using file sharing? IF you get caught? Because there are about 100 million people who file share ILLEGALLY, I would imagine you'd get an email, yeah. :teehee

i'll have to get linus on here to tell you the best sites to use filesharing. I retired from the mp3 game when the lawsuits started. Im suprised I didnt get sued myself since Ive been doing DL's of MP3's since 1999 before 95% of the world knew what mp3's were

If you're not pulling off major offenses (I'm talking distributing hundreds of mp3s over a p2p program, not just average use), I wouldn't worry about it *too* much.

I run a station on Live365. Whenever someone requests a song I don't have, I go looking for it on Kazaa. Haven't had a problem yet. And that's not including my collection for regular use.

I know Kazaa allows you to disable people's ability to download from you (though they don't recommend it, gee I wonder why), so if you're really worried about it.

Hahah pigfoot just subsicirbe to Rhapsody and get a kick ass audio card.

I use an Audigy2 platinum on my main box and all i do is set it to "record" what ever is playing on my PC. It does not use a mic since it's all internal. THen just name then ones you record. Perfect quality (kind of illegal) but no one can really tell you're doing it unless the are hoviering over you.

The real danger is if you're distributing files. When someone from the RIAA is looking for people to nail, they do a search for a song and then peg the people who have it available to download.
