This is my last resort !

I have had this problem with my printer and I am about to go buy a legal version of WinXP Pro to fix it. I previously had the HP 7550 when one day the print spooler decided to continously shut down. I read the forums and found, what I thought at the time to be, the answer. Post stated to run command SFC /scannow. I did this and while it was running it asked for the WinXP CD. From this point I was under the impression it was fixing something and it did. I installed a brand new printer (HP8050) and the Print spooler stayed on the whole time. Great my computer was able to see the printer, but wait...... SPECIFIED PORT NOT FOUND....

Went into Device manager and there was no exclamation mark next to the USB port. Went into Add Printer and could not see port that was in Device Manager. Though I was able to manually put the printer on and went to print a test page and found out it was a no go. When I went to print something it went through the cycle as though it was printing and printed into the air and just vanished. Now I go to the forums and look under this problem and have done everything up to the part where it says reinstall WinXP. Now I have a copied version dated back 4 years ago and I know I will come across problelms reinstalling a copied version. So my last idea is to go to Cosco and buy WinXP Pro w/SP2 and just start from scratch, hoping this will fix the port not found message. Before I go and spend $150 bucks on a copy of WinXP anyone know of any other steps I can do to get it working?

Check some of these out. At my last company we had the same issue I forget how we fixed it.

What chipset is on your motherboard? You might need to update the usb drivers. If its a via based board www.viaarena.com. Nvidia www.nvidia.com Ati www.ati.com.

HAve you checked in the bios to make sure all the ports are on?

Just some thoughts. As you know when trouble shooting start with the most simple things and work your way up. I would try these things first.

Let me add I have no idea your level of expertise with computers and I hope nothing I posted above seemed condescending. Also I dont think buying a new copy of XP will do a thing for you. If you have upgraded your current copy to SP 2 and kept up with the updates even though they are harder to get now with MS new validation tool you have the same thing you would be buying.

I have an Asus MB. As for checking the USB ports, the case came with 3 USB ports. I currently use one for my Digital camera to upload onto PC. I even tried deleting all the USB ports and disconnecting and restart the PC, to see if it would work. No Go.

Hmm so the port the camera runs off of works? Have you tried plugging the printer in to that one to see if it works? If it works there the you could buy a cheap usb hub and run it off that one.

Did the printer ever work?

What model of board do you have? IE A8V as an example? What CPU do you have Intel or AMD ????

The fact that you have a red exclamation mark by the port in the device manager concerns me. That is likely your problem. The ports may have gone bad. It's not likely but it does happen. Asus has always made top notch equipment. I use to only build on that brand.

Let me know.

Print spooler is working fine. Unable to locate port is the problem

I will look into this when I get home but not sure how this helps locating port.

Spooler is fine. This is a home PC

Sorry maybe I worded it incorrectly. Spooler is fine now. Finding the Specified Port is where the problem lies.

Never stated about having an exclamation point. It works fine for the camera. I tried plugging the printer into that port and still get same message.

Let me know.

Sorry I missread some of the information. I had AAADD. Advanced Adult Attention Deficit Disorder.

I would see if there are some updated motherboard drivers available.
