And as a general response to this thread as a whole, there is still a LOT of racism out there in White America. White folks just like to keep it on the DL. They save their "nigger" jokes for when only the white folk are around, assuming that if you are white you think like them. I can't tell you how many times I have met people and thought they were pretty cool until you are in an all white crowd, then they let their true colors show.

And although it may seem like every black person they interviewed was offended by it, the more probably answer is that every black person they interviewed AND put on the air were offended. I know plenty of black people that couldn't care less about that ad.

I'm ashamed to say that my brother and sister and probably my mother are kind of like this.


Being offended by racism makes for a story with more attention.

If they'd had black people who said "I don't care about it" then it kills their stance of "we hate the ad."

Being a born and bred liberal californian (even though I live in CT atm) I just dont understand racisim. I have never felt the need to make "nigger" jokes nor do I ever find them funny. Personally I dont care if you are white, black, brown, yellow, purple with green polkadots. People should be treated equally. That also holds true for religion, sexual preference, hair color and mental ability. For me anyway.

Needless to say, I had a really hard time living in Tennessee for 4 years. Us liberal treehuggers are always in season there.

i have a hard time living in TN too. i dont really care if you're black or white either, but the people here do. so you kind of can't avoid it. If you try to straddle the fence, one or the other will knock your ass off anyways :P

But... its just funny to hear a white man call another white man a 'nigger'. It just never happens around here. so you hear it and you're like oh shit! wait.. what? wtf? LOL.

"Nigger", when casually used, has almost the same meaning as "fag". When I was in high school, guys always called each other "fag" jokingly. I have some friends with younger brothers in high school and they now use "nigger" in the exact same way. When I piss people off in WoW, I can usually tell the age of the person by whether they call me "nigger" or "faggot".

There is a difference between black people, and "niggers", and there are "niggers" of every color. Actually my fiance and I just had a very similar conversation about this the other day. It seems that many of the white people are trying to let the race thing drop (albiet, not all, but most), but the minorities don't want that to happen because it gives them so many advantages. I think that's what causes a lot of the tensions. I, for one, am a little tired of everyone feeling like they 'deserve' special incentives and treatments, and extra money, because possibly at one point in time, someone looked at one of your family memebers in a slightly insulting way.

If you want to have the opinion that white people don't owe black people money or incentives now because of what happened years ago that is fine. However, pretending that what happened years ago was "slighly insulting looks" is insulting.

Vex is right this issue isn't going to die for a long time. Why? Because both sides won't let the bitterness and anger go - just look at this thread. And - I do agree that many minorities are using it as an excuse and not letting it go themselves - then the anger like in this thread feeds it. It works both ways, and it feeds off each other, and until *everyone* on at least one side or both sides lets it go, and lets the insults slide off then it won't ever end.

Ps- it isn't just minorities not letting it go, racism most certainly does still exist, and is still an issue - not something solved years ago.

Oh hell no thia shit will be around forever. There will always be ignorant people in the world who will have blind hatred for another because of there skin color, religion, sexuality. But the system is not being ued what it was intended for and is now abused by those that it is supposed to help. Like i said in my last post i just can't wait till white people are a minority so i can abuse the system to the fullest extent as well. You want your free shit too? Grow up in a neighborhood with schools that don't even meet the standard that is taught in your neighborhood - you know, the education provided to you - FOR FREE - that you took for granted. Take that child in the fucked up neighborhood and then say, 'hey, earn your way to college with that high school diploma that is worth shit because you read at an 8th grade level.

The white man's 'oh they get shit for free' is such bullshit. Everyone takes everything for granted - black, white, yellow, purple...you want to blame someone, blame the state education board for not providing teacher's with the pay they deserve to want to teach every child of every color and background the same level of education. It's a ripple effect but to stand there and say, 'I want my free shit' - jesus christ, that's just obnoxious.

And say we get past all this in about 200 years - it'll be based on income and the status quo. It's a little hard to rise above where you live and what you are when there isn't THE CHANCE to go beyond it.

Affirmative action is out dated, yes, but it still provides a chance to people of non white heritage to achieve loftier goals. It's only a hand out when people turn their back to it, but are you saying those who do use it for its purpose don't deserve it because of their color? Maybe that black man deserved that promotion over you (you being used generally), but you'll blame the system for your inadequacies.
