Racial slurs for adjectives - an incident at Best Buy.
So there I am in Best Buy, walking off disgusted with my husband and daughter looking over 360 games that only appeal to them. I declare that I would be in the dvd horror section, picking out an expensive movie when a female and male employee walk by me and another woman talking about some game. Loud and clear as a bell, the male exclaims:
'Oh man, that's just JEWED!'
What the...? I turned and watched the two walk off laughing. The male is Caucasian and the female is spanish. My mouth drops open and my attempt to find an old horror movie made in the 80's has been aborted. I look at the woman standing next to me who is also watching the pair. She looks back at the movies, shakes her head and sighs.
'Did he...just say what I think he just said?' I ask her slowly.
She looked at me and nodded. 'Yes, he did say what we think he just said.'
'Did he say...?'
'He sure did say...'
I took a step past her and tried tippy toeing over the shelves to see where he went. I look back and her and ask again.
'He did say...'
She laughed, 'Yeah and I can't believe he said it either.'
'Oh no.' I walk off towards the employee and stop him over by the car alarms.
'Hi, excuse me?'
The male is now standing with 3 other employees who all stop and look at me.
'Did you just say the word 'Jewed' while you were walking thru the dvd horror section?'
Little smile, but mostly blank look, 'Oh yeah, I did.'
'....Uh...you are aware that...that's a bad thing?'
'I was just talking about some new game release.'
'Wh...?' I reached out and touched his name tag. TIM. 'Thank you, Tim.'
I go back to the 360 section and tell Mike what happened. He gave me a sad look and said, 'Well, was he young?' He was. 'Well...that generation...'
I walk off again, this time towards the digital cameras. I ask a nice older man if I could speak to a manager. He was most helpful and directed me to 'Darren.'
I start with my story, 'Ok...now...I'm old. I'm in my 30's...maybe it's just me but...' Then I tell him the whole story.
Darren replies with his eyes wide, 'I'm sorry, what?'
I explain again.
'Ma'am...I am SO sorry.' He goes on to tell me about Best Buy not have tolerance for intolerance and said he would talk to him. I explained I wasn't trying to narc on him and get him fired but maybe it wasn't my position to let him know that he's a pig. That would be more Darren's job.
So...is it me or is the younger generation living by a different set of socially acceptable rules? Mike and I discussed political correctness but I said, how could any kid NOT know that saying something was JEWED was a racial slur and offensive? In this day and age, where racial strife seems so prevalent in schools and tv. Mike countered, 60 years after the Holocaust, how could a 20 year know? Right now the racial tension is with black, muslims and latinos. Gone are the days of jews being persecuted, seemingly.

So wait let me make sure i am understanding this right. As long as its not said in person and just typed out its ok to make a stupid crack at something. Yet when a very similar situation is overheard in person its moraly wrong.
So by that logic i can make a stupid crack about you being a stupid nigger gylius and its ok. So long as i make it sound like a "joke" and i type it out on a message board. But if you were to overhear this where i work it would raise hell.

In fact, it was a pretty big ripoff on my part from Family Guy.

Then you deliver the punch line that contradicts the positive message of the set-up. Peter said "...as long as we're all the same religion." I said "we can all agree that... handicapped arent whole people."
The joke type is pretty formulaic and if you pay close enough attention you'd probably see it from professional stand up comics in some form.
And if you want to write your own jokes, you have to know they will be funny. If you're new to comedy, try to draw on the experiences of others. Michael Richard's experience tells me that calling Gylius a nigger will not go well for you. So I advise against it.

TAC is definitely not a hate board, that run ended a long time ago. It is, however, an adult board. I'm not locking this up because the recent posts actually still pertain to the original topic of this post. If those involved now in this recent fiasco feel the need to call each other names while explaining their opinions, well that's on y'all and your inability to discuss a rather sensative subject in a more refined manner. Ok I'll break this down to you nice and easy.
1. Workplace. No it's not ok to do it at work. It's a place of business. In which case the rules are different, and you aren't allowed to do it there. In which case it doesn't matter if it's a joke or not because someone overhearing it isn't going to understand it.
2. Personally, nothing anyone says can offend me. It's been a long time since anyone could. Kramer's racist rant didn't offend me, but I'm unique. So as I said for me, if you could get a punchline out of saying nigger then go for it. A lot of comics do it. Not all of them are black. And that's why I said it's ok to use a racial slur in a joke.
3. I'm not sure how you can even argue that using a racial slur in a joke is ok, but not using it as an actual insult is indicative of a fucked up sense of morals. What does that even mean? In fact you're negating just about all slightly-insulting comedy with that remark. That's what makes comedy great, you can say things that off-color BECAUSE IT'S A JOKE. It has nothing to do with a fucked up sense of morals.
4. Regarding your P.S. Where did I bitch in this thread at all about racism? Except saying where did people's sense of humor go? Feel free to search for it. If you're going to make a remark. At least try to make it true.

Here's the paradox as I see it. In a highly capitalistic society, thriving businesses typically could care less about ethics. You don't want to give your competition a fighting chance, you want to burry it as soon as possible.
Big corporations like Nike have been known to exploit the system to its fullest extent. Fuck the minimum wage, let's just outsource labour to third-world countries and pay the workers dimes an hour to make our shoes.
This makes a lot of sense if your sole goal is to maximize profits. Marginal cost of production is reduced dramatically, and profits go up the roof. Profits these corporations can then use to partially finance positive ad campaigns, like "We care about the environment", "We're contributing 5 million dollars towards AIDS research", or "We're supplying computers to your school if you buy so much from our store."
As human beings, we tend to appreciate the seemingly generous gestures put forth by these companies. And maybe that's why we feel compelled to shop with them.
That's exactly what they want$$$. Best Buy is certainly no exception, especially up here in Montreal where they face stiff competition with the Canadian equivalent FutureShop.
Naturally any racial slur will have the potential of affecting customers adversely. But you've got to understand that any capitalistic company doesn't really care about moral implications. It just wants the consumer to keep buying, and in so doing will pretend to care about your problems and complaints.
