Text effect tutorial...with some pictures.
Ok, I'm not good at writing tutorials, but this is very similar to the text work done on the EQ2 Rikr sig.
1. I started off with a 500 X 350 file, with a black background @ 100 dpi. I used about 150 font size in white.
2. On the font layer I went to layer style -> Bevel and Emboss and used the following settings:
3. Next, I selected the text layer (CTL + left click) And modified the selection by contracting it by 5 pixels.
3.5. Rastorize the text layer.
4. After selection was made, I cut it and pasted the selection onto a new layer above the text layer, and line it back up to the center of the font so it didn't look cut out. The cut-out will be white.
5. Next I went to Layer Style -> Bevel / Emboss the new cutout layer with the following settings. Notice the gloss countour change.
6. The next step I adjusted the hue / sat of this cutout layer. Adjust the sliders until you get a similar effect as shown below. Try moving the lightness slider to -30. (I'm not sure why it was +3 in the pic)
7. Merge the font and the cutout layer together.
8. Adjust the Hue / Sat again for the merged layers. Play with the lightness slider until you get a similar look to this pic.
9. When done, burn the bottom. I used the following settings.
And there you have it.
I'm sure there are easier ways to do it, but I normally pick the most difficult. Hope this makes some sense, and hope I didn't leave anything out. Its not exactly the same, but similar.
Here's what I got with my changes. Yes the cutout will be white when you paste in a new layer...even after you run the bevel effect on the cutout it may look white. My sliders were goofy in the original tutorial for some reason....I had the same problem you did Mae. Maybe I forgot something...however if you move the lightness slider into the negative it will adjust the hue....should work ok from there. I'll try it one more time with my adjustments and make sure it works.
...I mean, this tut.

Plus where in the layer stack is the new cut out? On top of the original I dont see a difference, below it I see it, but still can't do the color change without changing it to something other than white.

Edit:
Lemme file some papers first and clean my desk. I just got done hanging pictures around my desk. LOL.... Will try to have this tut fixed before I leave today.

Heres what I got after doing it again.
