New musical crushes...

I'm trying to exercise some self control and -not- buy every album I want on impulse, so my waiting list is growing longer and longer :(. I've decided two CDs a month is acceptable and not in excess.

I just got a hold of Neutral Milk Hotel's 'On Avery Island', prelude to the excellent 'Aeroplane Over The Sea', and I enjoyed every track. I'm officially a fan I think, though they were an acquired taste for me.

Another acquired taste was the gritty but gripping tones of Leonard Cohen. He is heavily covered, possibly a result of some seriously gut-wrenching lyrics combined with melodies you can play with. I picked up an album of covers by various artists, including one of my favorites, Rufus Wainwright. Surprisingly, it was his sister Martha's cover of 'The Traitor' that really made this a truly worthwhile purchase.

In any case, there are several artists in my little holding pen. I heard an interview with Ben Kweller today - apparently he's fairly popular but I'd never heard of him :X. He played a couple songs live and...fuck I'm sold! I sincerely hope he isn't over produced on tape though - he sounds -great- with just him and his guitar. I think you can get to the songs he played here :http://www.eitmonline.com/live.html . The banner might be kind of not work safe, just to warn ya.

I also have a mad crush on Belle and Sebastian. I'm having trouble picking out which album to get, is the problem. They are darling and delightful *squishes*

Mason Jennings has a groove I'd like to tap into. Guster released a fine work quite some time ago that I still haven't gotten around to buying. Arcade Fire has caught my attention. And Bright Eyes is releasing a new album I think this month or next.

God, it's a wonder the music industry doesn't have all my money.

In any case, this really wasn't just to blab on and on about me - I'm wondering what y'all are stuck on right now - what you've bought recently and what you'd like to add to your collection.

Oooh....Rufus Wainwright album coming out May 15th.

Teh choice will tear me apart!

...In all seriousness, as much as I <3 Rufus Wainwright, I am going to wait and listen to more singles (Going to a Town is his first and he has a rather nice, polished video for it) and then make up my mind. I'll most likely get it eventually though.

Going to a Town Video:

I really do like his music...this song just captures the disillusioned weariness that's underlying everything lately. -Very- timely imo. I'm normally kind of 'meh' on political musicians but I feel like he focuses on bringing things into context and expressing emotion rather than ranting and raving.

:shrug ... I'm confused.. did I miss some profanity in She Wants Revenge? I know one song has the f-word a few times, but rest seemed pretty clean...

I haven't found a new crush yet, still listening to recent ones :P I did try the Bright Eyes album, but just can't get into them. Four Winds is decent, but the rest.. eh. And Cocorosie is just a tad too out there for me :lol

Don't say that about my secret gay boyfriend :(.

Maybe She Wants Revenge is just unlucky or something...both songs I heard on the radio had something inappropriate at a bad time :X so I tend to skip when I see their name come up. The one song where it goes dead quiet except teh dude singing 'I wanna fucking tear you apart' just...dun work :\. It's not really about profanity I guess - if a song were like lalalafucklalala it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

You definately found the worst song on the album for She Wants Revenge Veri.

I'm currently enjoying the new Maroon 5... it's surprisingly good.:)

Tried out Zero 7, but they're too downtempo for me to listen to at work... I require stuff that helps me stay awake there lol.

Lol, okay I'll give them another chance.

I haven't purchased my May CDs yet :\. The month is almost over, what happened! lol

my brother in law asked me to listen to spoon (again, vulash made me listen once) because he said it reminded him a lot of sneaker pimps / iamx, and after looking at that link, and listening to "the ghost of you lingers", i tend to agree!

i might have to buy this album

BOMBAY DUB ORCHESTRA!!

this is like, indian symphonic electro dub. sort of. most of the tracks arent even dub. its like orchestral music, with indian instruments, and like... hell i cant even explain it well enough to do it justice. its freaking classical music with indian instruments, indian vocalists, and small bits of electronica, sometimes mixed with dub basslines, to varying degrees.

their website claims:
Bombay Dub Orchestra is music that will stroke the senses and enamour the soul, with its uniquely brilliant crossover of orchestral arrangements, modern, lush beats and synthesizers and a heavy slant to the music of India . That territory has been mapped by bands like Röyksopp, Air and Zero 7, but no one had dragged a 28-piece Indian string section into the arena before. And while the name "Bombay Dub Orchestra" conjures up visions of the garish pop of Bollywood's song-and-dance numbers, or the reverb-drenched, proto-psychedelic sounds of Jamaican dub, this music creates and sustains a very different mood.

i keep listening to the first CD (the album is a double CD set with a remix CD), and an orchestral song will come on, and ill reach to change to the next track but my hand never makes it to the button because i become intrigued by a string piece or a flute or some vocals that popped up out of nowhere.

they have three songs posted on their website, which are good, but my favorites are Beauty and the East, and The Berber of Seville (The Berber of Suburbia Mix), which are quite uncoincidentally the most dubbed out tracks on the album imo

another really really good album i got is Flunk - For Sleepyheads Only. its more downtempo electro stuff, with a female vocalist who sounds like bjork, and a male vocalist who reminds me of david byrne. check out the songs See Through You, Miss World, Syrupsniph, and Distortion. they also did a remake of Blue Monday, which is also good. its like Blue Monday with bjork singing and an acoustic guitar over some electronica. good stuff!

*dusts off thread*

I've been delving more into electronica and checking out some of the recommendations here - thought Pharren in particular might dig this guy:

I like 'Deserter' :). I don't think this has reached 'crush' level yet, still exploring.

Also rediscovering the Flaming Lips (only really knew their hits before, but they've released some really rich albums that I'm enjoying a lot) and liking Thievery Corporation and Massive Attack a lot. It's a slow process, though, I'm still mostly into singer/songwriter acoustic stuff but I like to venture out sometimes and good situational music is nice.

Okay I'm going through a folk phase now. We went to see Glen and Marketa (of Once fame, they won the oscar for best song) for our anniversary which was, of course, completely and totally amazing, and this wonderful young man opened for them:

I was blown away. His voice is -amazing- live. Fucking amazing. I liked FM radio best but only by a little bit. It was all gorgeous, I want to make out with him for like an hour, he is my new secret musical boyfriend, omg listen!

And also, if you haven't watched Once yet, what the fuck? Come on!
