Domino Sig

A friend of mine recently started with Sony as an EQ2 game designer working specifically with tradeskills, and she asked me to make a sig for her forum identity -- a brown-haired halfling named Domino. It also had to be 100x440 pixels in dimension.

Of course I jumped all over it! I would kill for the graphic design sense that runs so strongly on these boards, but barring that I err on the side of graphic restraint and my pet font. It was fun doing the pencil sketch of all of those tradeskill-produced items, and slightly sad to let them take second place to the type!

She's so darn cute! That's a very unique and differnt sig for the SOE forums. If that were my sig I'd be posting all over the EQ2 forums going "looky what I got!!!@#!!!!11"

I love the highlights on her face and skin, adorable expression and overall I love the sig set up. C/C wise - I like how you matched the font to her general sephia color, I don't think it would hurt it to make it a little smaller, but I'm a big fan of different fonts. I love love that font and I would have kept it for the Dev title, but with her name I would've used something with a little more flare, not over done since you don't want to pull away from anything else, but I was thinking something like Trajunbricks font, you can find that on dafont.com and if you want, you can see what I mean =D

I'll look into that! What a great suggestion. I see what you mean about the font size and changing font styles. I think Domino wants to keep the sig as it is, but I really want to bring the finish of the piece to the next level.

Even though I don't really do many sigs, I think that I'll work on them anyway just so that I can get feedback on the design process. You guys here at TAC swim in that world, and it would behoove me to avail myself of your experience and expertise.

I was thinking about the font issue and more importantly about you hating to make the fun tradeskill items 2ndary. I think I have a suggestion/solution for you on that. I'm assuming you have photoshop layers you can move around. Nevermind the font I was tinkering with. I was looking more at color than a font that works really well.

That's really fresh-looking! I do have it all in layers, so I can tinker with it. I think that once I can come up with a comprehensive, polished alternative, I'll send her another file.

Granted the loaves are duplicated at this point, but I wanted to put this up to get feedback on the arrangement. It's really interesting to remix the elements!

I would make "domino" larger and maybe move it under "eq2 trade..." offset slightly behind the "d". The text should be a coheisive visual unit because it's balancing the sig against the character. You might even consider making the "eq2 trade...." a little smaller. Also concider allowing the test to align a little more with the bottom border line (who knows if that will work visually but if I were able to move things around I'd give it a try). I think that would allow the neat background items to show more. Btw, I didn't even see the hammer in the 1st one.

What if you let the 2nd loaf of bread go but very faintly added more of the wall just along the top behind her hair? There's a cool negative shape going on with the border and her outline.

I'm not sure that I completely grasp all that you were saying, Lunna, but here we go. How is this?

I think you grasped it pretty well. This last version looks really good. I think the background is more prominate. The text is more of a complete visual unit which balances the sig against the character (the focal point).

Where did you get the font that you were using as an example, Lunna? Mine looks a bit gooey to me -- I like the sharpness of what you used.

I got that one at http://www.dafont.com/

It's called Stonehenge. I picked it because I was thinking about hobbits, which lead me to the sort of organic celtic style fonts. It's a pretty font but the "d" character isnt very good. There are better fonts to be had and there are some really good ones on that site. Livingstone and Cabaletta are also nice in that same font style.
