Thoughts on combining art forums
Deviantart has Mixed Media - This gallery is a home to those deviations that consist of two (or more) of the following DIGITAL art forms: Paintings/Drawings/Airbrushing, Photomanipulation, 3D, Fractals and Vectors/Vexels - from here on referred to as basic art forms. The basic art forms should be clearly distinguishable in the piece, meaning they should be present in roughly equal parts. Traditional artforms mixed with digital work should not be posted here unless there was 1. more ditital than traditional work done AND 2. you used more than one of the basic art forms. This makes the gallery idea for matte paintings (use of photomanips and painting) or terraspace art (use of 3d rendered landscapes combined with painting/photomanips).

Mixed media, in visual art, refers to an artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed.
There is an important distinction between "mixed media" artworks and "multimedia art". Mixed media tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on paper or canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a "mixed media" work - but not a work of "multimedia art." The term multimedia art implies a broader scope than mixed media, combining visual art with non-visual elements (such as recorded sound, for example) or with elements of the other arts (such as literature, drama, dance, motion graphics, music, or interactivity).
When creating a painted or drawn work using mixed media it is important to choose the layers carefully and allow enough drying time between the layers to ensure the final work will have integrity. If many different media are used it is equally important to choose a sturdy foundation upon which the different layers are imposed. An old rule good to remember is "Fat over lean." In other words, don't start with oil paints. Plan to make them the final layer.
Many interesting effects can be achieved by using mixed media. Often, found objects are used in conjunction with traditional artist mediums, such as paints and graphite, to express a meaning in the everyday life. In this manner, many different elements of art become more flexible than with traditional artist mediums.
I figure, there are very few of us (if any at all) that do straight 3d with no postwork. This in itself causes us to label our poser work on DA.com as 'mixed media'. Its not one or the other but its a mix of more than 1 medium. I think it's a necessary evolution - thoughts?
I think 'digital art' works better if we want to go that route. A little more all encompassing. Then have the freehand/photography/traditional for photography, pencils, paints, crafts, etc.
Yup, totally agree with this! I like the way "digital art" sounds way better than "mixed media".
i think unless you're painting pretty much the entire scene + hair + clothing ( or maniping it from photos ) around a 3d render it should stay in 3d.
rendering a character and putting a 2d bg in is not 'mixed media' imo.
i kinda like em separated, but i am weird.
I guess to me if something is done entirely on the computer it's digital, and if it's done using standard "live" materials it's traditional. I suppose mixed media would be mixing those two catagories?
