Do you wash it?
My husband asked me last night why I wash every piece of produce including things like oranges, cantelope and watermelon. He said, "You remove the skin so why wash it?"
I tried to explain to him about pesticides and food grade waxes and that sort of thing, but he just rolled his eyes.
I don't buy all organic produce, because with two children that eat 3 to 5 pieces of fruit each, each day, it gets really expensive. Not to mention my own 3-5 pieces along with the fresh veggies my hubby and I eat, a little over half our weekly grocery bill goes to the produce section of the store.
So I just wondered, do you wash all of your produce, including stuff you take the skin from, or just the stuff you eat with out peeling?

Roots I wash to get dirt off them, and fruits I dont peel, like grapes and apples and things ill rinse off before serving.

But then I grew up in the fields as we had horses and we used to eat it all right from the tree. Apples, raspberries, brambles, you name it, we ate it.
Honestly, by todays standards of food cleanliness to be healthy, me and my bro and sis should be riddled with illnesses lol. But none of us even got an upset stomach unless we ate the cooking apples...
I dont wash things like bananas or oranges.. most of our citrus we get ( when its in season) from my mother's yard though, since she has lemon, orange, tangerine and lime trees, as well as peaches and plums, figs and some veggies, so those I would only wash to get bird germs off em ( ugh)

I'm with Lessa -- I only wash things I'm going to eat. if I peel it, I don't wash it...unless its potatos, cause peeling them just makes the dirt spread all over :P

I did find this great list thanks to a post at VegWeb regarding what organics you should definitely buy and what you can skate on.

I wash pretty much all of the fruits and vegetables that I get, whether they get skinned or not. Organic or not. Whether it is pesticides or dirt or just the grubby hand funk of other shoppers, I don't want it in my belly.

Oh also cherries and grapes i wash sometimes, and stuff like cranberries and gooseberries... You dunno what weird bugs can get caught up in there.
