The Watchmen

I've never seen or heard of the graphic novel it's based on, so I have no preconceptions. From what I saw in the trailer tho, looks pretty bad ass for a comic type movie.

From IMDB:
When an ex-superhero is murdered, a vigilante named Rorshach begins an investigation into the murder, which begins to lead to a much more terrifying conclusion.

Mike has this graphic novel. It's actually the first one of his gn's that I picked up and read (in the bathroom, of course). It's also the first time I saw rape in a comic book. =/ I couldn't finish it, not beginning to end, but from what Mike tells me it is an amazing story.

The movie looks out-fucking-landish though. Billy Crublahblah as the main guy - interesting choice. It's an incredibly violent comic, not quite like Wanted, but it's interesting to see so many graphic novels adapted into movies with the huge sucess of 300. A LOT of incredible stories out there - 2009 should rock for movies, for sure.

I dont know if 2009 will. Normally movie trend it 1 year of ROCK and 1 year of SUCK.. this year has rocked really fuckin hard ( omg i got behind on my movies every weekend )

it will be crazy if next year rocks too. Glad to see that hollywood as stepped up and is giving us fat lazy american fuckers a reason to get off our couch and stop waiting for PPV!

I really liked the graphic novel but my expectations for the movie aren't all that high. I'll see it but...I don't know, it seems like there's a lot to the graphic novel that they're going to have trouble translating to film. Plus it needs updating imo, which might do weird things to it.

Still wondering what they're going to do with Dr. Manhattan.

I'd give more credit to Sin City then 300 for the trend, even though 300 was awesome.

Vex - All I did last semester was work and school from wake up till bed. I don't even know what movies came out other than a couple. Can you be more specific on the ones that made this year rock?

Wanted was good, that's for sure. Dark Knight is proving to be amazing. Hancock...not so much but for mind numbing summer fun, it paid the bills for Will Smith.

The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning - Smashing Pumpkins

There's some broohaha about the SP song they used in the trailer - which I thought fucking kicked ass. Apparently it was originally used in 1997's 'Batman & Robin'. The trailer for Watchmen apparently rolled for the first time during the Dark Knight previews.

COINCIDENCE?!

I'd have to agree on the updating. A big basis of the story was the fear/tension of the cold war and I think that unless they retool it (which I know they have) it would have a more limited audience range today. In fact while it is a great story, it is one that hasn't aged as well since it is rooted in a specific period where new emerging readers don't have a reference point in relation to the story.

As for my expectations I will have to limit them. They will have to significantly reduce a lot of the more introspective periods of the books and reduce the flashback periods to build it into a movie that people will flock too. No one wants to a see a middle-aged "Batman-escqe" superhero with a potbelly wearing glasses bemoaning his sexual and other symbolic impotence.

Quite simply we will get all the flash and bang of the comic and changed for a wider audience, much like Wanted was. Not that I won't watch it.

Oh and Dr. Manhatten (Billy Cruddup) isn't supposed to be the main person of the whole thing.

*nods* yeah, I didn't really consider Manhattan the main person of the book either. I just wonder how they handle a giant blue nudist. I hope they go the Austin Powers route and just hold up coffee cups and potted plants as he works his way through the room :X. Also showing how he experiences time is going to be interesting.

Anyway Rorschach is the heart of the story for me.

I hear they are entirely doing away with the 'comic within a comic', which I can't disagree with. I also heard they might do a separate movie or something of just that subcomic. I'm kind of meh on that but *shrugs*.

From what I can see from the previews, Manhatten looks to be more CGI than person, and he looks more like Mystique did in the X-Men movies...naked, but not...?

another Dc superhero movie.. Idont really know any of the actors.. or superheros for that matter.. but it looks like they did a good job of it and it might be worth watching.
