Rocky Horror Picture show - MTV ruins a classic
'Rocky Horror' Coming to MTV; Prepare to Shout and Throw Things at Screen
More: mtv, news, rocky horror picture show, television

Remember the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Well prepare to forget it! Because MTV is making a hip new version for their cable network that's going to knock the last 30 years of midnight showings out of existence:
MTV is doing the time warp on a remake of 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original.
I really like that they're using the original screenplay. It's as close as they'll come to admitting "we have nothing new to add to this, but need an excuse to have another girl from The Hills act and sing something." Want to takes bets on how long it will be until we get an announcement for The Rocky Horror Reality Show, in which couples compete for who can stay longest in a transvestite-filled mansion?
(Thanks to R and Snoodle for the tip.)

This is the worst idea for a remake I've ever heard. It is impossible for the remake to outdo the original. I'm not a huge fan (though I had fun watching it), but it is what it is because of the campyness and because of what it is - it grew on itself - you can't remake that. That's like remaking Army of Darkness or Holy Grail.

First off - Army of Darkness was a commercial sell out. Evil Dead2 - remaking that would be a SIN of all sins.
Remaking this is like seeing Meryl Streep and Pierce Bronsan singing ABBA songs - you could do it, but would you want to make out and throw toast at it still?

I liked both :( Either way point stands! You can't remake cult stuff and have it be an improvement - at least not certain ones and this is one of them. They would almost be better off making some type of spin on it that plays off the original or something - hell who am I kidding even that would suck. MTV sucks anyway.
PS - You just reminded me to add Bruce Campbell's books to my goodreads :D

It is its cult status that makes it as popular as it has become.
One reason I don't want to see a remake is that I saw it live twice, before it ever became a movie, and only really liked the movie because it reminded me of the live production. I've never seen the movie at any screening where the audience participates, and never will...I just don't enjoy that kind of thing.
(I loved Mama Mia, btw. I had a very difficult time sitting still in that movie though...I was constantly humming, and tapping my feet, or bouncing in my seat...it was so the best musical I've seen in eons!)

I grew up listening to ABBA - by the age of 10 I knew the words to all the songs.

when i was in high school, my bf ( now hubby) and his siblings ( went to high school with them) would go every saturday to this little single theater in old tempe and watch Rocky, with the live played out show on the stage under the theater.. we would dress up ( for me, miniskirts and thigh highs and whatever else I felt I could get away with, that night, all other times id be too shy to express myself like that) and bring bags of popcorn or toast to throw ( its part of the cult experience and some of the jokes) We must have seen it about 20 times and had a blast every time. It wouldnt play til midnight and the house was usually packed.
Doing the Time Warp! omg haha. *sighs* good times.. :p
I dont think I could appreciate a remake. :(

I've only been to one show, sorta. It was when Mike and I worked at Crater Lake in Oregon back in 92. It was like 20 or 30 people smashed into one person's room, watching a video of it but throwing the toast and squirting water for rain. We didn't stay for it all but it was pretty fun.

And - Is there a single person over the age of 15 that isn't directly making money from this film that is actually excited about it? Besides George Bush.

I have no idea why they called them that, but it was the living areas where they shoved all the bunk beds for employees.
