Poor Lonely SMMO :(

So I went back over to studiommo, because I haven't been to much of any sites at all regarding art with the exception of this one (my muse took off somewhere), and when I went back, it seems like there's hardly any traffic there at all! :(

The Halloween Howl is coming up, and I've always enjoyed that. I hope that people sign up for it, so it can be as fun as it's been in the past.

Hint, hint! :ptth

The one that didn't happen? Or....
Lessa 17 years ago
maybe revamp the event.. change the rules up a bit.. or something else entirely since it seems like every other forum around had a fairy tale idea since then hehehe. :)

Ill help out with anything you need. :D

I can help too if you need. Now that James is on a bit of a schedule I can plan my day out better, for the most part anyway.

The one that didn't happen, yeah. Doing a halloween one is always fun. We're open to any and all ideas and help!

What about an exchange kind of like iron chef where we all have you use some common ingredient like a freebie prop or something else that would be easy for everyone to all have? Does that make sense?! I'm out of coffee and cheese whiz!
ROzbeans 17 years ago
That would be interesting - we can do something festive like a pumpkin?

SMMO... yea. Primarily it was the crediting that annoyed the crap out of me but I'd felt distanced and never a part after some drama eons ago... and then when I got too busy to do much online my daiily visits to the forums fell victim to the time management Nazi... and I've never really gone back *shrug* I love it here. Here I can say fuck, and not get shooshed. Hell I can say it all the fucking time and no one cares. That pleases me *nodnodnod*

As for a Halloween exchange.. yes please! I think the idea of a common freebie used somehow works, maybe give a choice of anything from the Renderosity Halloween freebies (for 3d artists) or we could find some freebie themed brushes, etc for non 3d artists. A pick and choose from x number of things, so no one feels too restricted JIK the recipient wants an All Hallow's theme vs a Halloween one, or just wants autumn etc.

It wouldn't be difficult to render up some pngs for people to use either.

Yeah, I bet someone around here could put together a freebie pumpkin or fallish-whatever for all of us to use as "The Prop" :) Or maybe a few different props to choose from?

Neat!

redheadstock has some good haloweeny freebie brushes as well..

i can't go to smmo without telling someone they're sluts. count me out.

I've made whiney boyfriend posts and you never called me a slut. /cries

I think its because we are all growing out of MMOs?! No no, that can't be it, I don't post there because no one else does. That is my only reason...

Don't feel bad for fading away from SMMO -- I'm guilty of the same as well, even when I was there in body, but not in spirit! It was glorious back in its golden age and served a real purpose back when we were starting out in Everquest. There were a lot of things that changed over the years which contributed to its decline -- nothing bad, no single person or group is responsible for it. The internet evolved, MMOs changed, people found better places to express their art, current MMO message boards force us to use preset avatars and text sigs, etc. There's just less of a need to create artwork. I definitely agree the crediting has been on the anal side of the years, but that was the precedent set by the original board owner and most of the original members clung to it religiously to defend themselves against internet art theft, etc. I never did Poser so I don't fully understand what kind of credits are required, but I have seen it become an unfortunate problem at the poster's expense repeatedly. We had quite a few people try to shake things up, try to bring life back into the place, but I honestly feel that the place along with the EQ Pixel Army just continue to exist out of nostaliga. And it's OK if nothing much happens there. It originally started out as a small collection of artwork by random posters who wanted to share their tips. It can continue that way and benefit someone like it once did for us. ;)

Whatever its problems were, I think most of us can agree that the exchanges were the most fun part. This is why I'm tempted to return for the Howl if I have the spare time. It's the best exchange of the year! The only thing that annoyed me about the Howl was that it was the one time to seriously fuck up those characters, but people still brought out Tinkerbell and cutesy fairies that they could already do the rest of the year! Arrrgggh! =p

Maybe a Halloween exchange with a sort of "cliche` horror" theme...offensiveness a must?
Lessa 17 years ago
haha, I could totally see us doing that too!

I agree with Lil !!!

I was thinking we probably didn't want to do our exchange the same time as theirs, but honestly I don't care or think it's a problem. We'll come up with something.

I still try and go over to see what folks are working on. The problem I have is just getting the site to load. I click on a link and it spins and spins and then quits. Sometimes I have to try for several minutes just to get an art forum to open so I can see new threads.

LMAO! If not for SMMO I would not have met the "other" Mae which would not have led me here so it has done lovely things. A long time ago I loved going there and talking and looking at people's art. I did leave mostly because there were times when the only activity to my post was a moderator grilling me over my base credits (which were my own and therefore not listed) or to ask was that a paint over or was it really possible that in the time they had not seen my artwork I might have improved some.

Of course I have fond fond memories of some of Vex's rants in the members forums. Those still bring a smile to my face.

I still look at Smoo on an almost daily basis. The feature that gives you a pop up of people who have checked your profile is pretty telling. Someone who I described to Vex as a ... well it wasn't flattering ... had checked my profile in the past week. Still there are people who come and go that are friends who don't come by here so it's a nice link.
