Meme

http://afk2pee.com/blog/?p=557
A meme (pronounced /mi:m/)[1] consists of any idea or behavior that can pass from one person to another by learning or imitation. Examples include thoughts, ideas, theories, gestures, practices, fashions, habits, songs, and dances. Memes propagate themselves and can move through the cultural sociosphere in a manner similar to the contagious behavior of a virus.
I see this from time to time. I just don’t get it. Discuss.

Meh, it's just one of those internet things...you know, that goes around the internet like it's the word of the day or something...what do you call that?

But seriously :). I remember we had a discussion ages and ages ago on TAC, in which I invoked an inside joke and someone who shall remain nameless jumped down my throat for daring to use the word 'meme' without discussing Dawkins and the selfish gene and 10 other kinds of crap to prove I had done enough research to have the right to utter those sacred four letters. And then there are people who manage to bambozzle 2 other people into using a certain phrase and are all 'omg I started a meme'.

All that said, I look forward to a good meme discussion, even if I don't contribute much :).

I dont know, its prolly exactly that roz, but I bet theres s ome truth to it.

I mean, I know I say good lord alot hehe, i didnt always, and none of my family say it, but a friend of mine does and always has and somehow it became a habit of mine. I also know my kids have gestures and expressions that are a heck of alot like mine and David's. I think to a point it might be a instinctual thing.. its how kids learn to speak and behave. And its something that we dont completely grow out of, even though it may not be as common as we get older.

Its also why I dont allow my kids to listen to music with a ton of cursing, or speak to people on xbox live (or anywhere else if i can help it) who swear ( they immediately get muted and removed from any lists) Even though I know theyve said and heard all those words before, Once you ( especially as a kid) hear something enough times it becomes force of habit or you become accustomed to it.

I have to agree, Lessa; I ***never*** swore as a child & teen... now one car cuts me off and you'd swear (no pun intended) that I was a Boston cabbie or something. No offense to any Boston cabbies that may be out there ;)

My dad, when I was growing up, used to say "F'Cryin' out loud!" when he actually wanted to say the F word; I have managed to pick that up and do it a lot. Especially at work :lol

I remember that discussion,Billie. The response you got was unwarranted and completely ridiculous; just someone wanting to show the internet world how smart they thought they were at the expense of someone else.

As far as meme's go...these days it seems to have come to mean the annoying questionnaires that all the people on your blogging friend's list do and pass around. I have one or two on my list that seem to feel its necessary to do every one they come across and post it. Like knowing what colour eyeshadow I prefer or what my favourite stuffed animal is named is going to be make us -that- much closer.

I do find the occasional one interesting and if its unique enough I'll do it and maybe even post it for like minded friends but to me the word has come to mean blogs I can safely skip over.

I wish they would make a no meme filter on LJ and myspace. That would be awesome.

-Have you heard anything from Becca?
- No, not in ages.
-Don't you have her on your friends list?
-Yeah, why?
-She posted just yesterday.
-Ah, well I have the no meme filter on so I never see anything she writes.

For the record, there are a few people that make me long for a no whining filter. Occasional bitching (like I'm doing now ) and whining is fine but I also have a few people for whom every post is some complaint or whine of some sort. My complaint...they tend to be long winded while doing it. :winky

As far as cursing goes... I was taught that children weren't allowed to curse and that was the end of that. My mother might not have washed my mouth out with soap but my grandmother most certainly would have. It was no idle threat and I can't recall which grandchild found out the hard way. There are still situations where its not appropriate and I think that distinction comes from being taught manners while growing up more than anything else. I've met people who speak and behave in a work environment far worse than I would anywhere in public...or in private for that matter. I curse plenty while out with friends but rarely if ever at work. (I do work with wood, glass and sharp objects and seriously cutting oneself is a justifiable "damn it" or something of the like)

The passing on of things like meme originally meant is kind of interesting. I've found myself occasionally picking up things that are said amongst friends. I can't stand to hear something over and over again ; so its annoying when one friend uses some new catch phrase, driving it into the ground, and it gets picked up by several more friends until you can't seem to go two sentences without hearing it.

A friend started using something that was a typical British phrase. I disliked the over done accent she put on every time she said it. It was then wrote in the Harry Potter books often enough that it became so commonplace here that even people who didn't read the books were saying it. I can't recall it at the moment (obvious a mental block from the deep psychological trauma it caused) but I do remember the near constant eye twitch every time it was used.

LOL
My first roommate when through a phase of baby talking. After a while I didn't even notice it.
Then one day I was at my mom's house, and she looked at me really strangely and asked..."what are you doing?" I told her I didn't know what she was talking about and she told me I sounded like a two year old! After that I made it my goal to stop my roommate, and finally did after several weeks!

My brother in law grew up in Canada, but spent three years going to high school in England. The man is in his 40s now and STILL has a British accent. I swear I think he does everything in his power to foster it though, and since I've always liked English accents, I never say anything lol.

Really? Something I said to death in the mid 90s, till someone called me on it. Now I'm trying to get away from ... Seriously? I guess I have a very susceptible mind :P
