Night of the Musem 2

After 2006’s Night at the Museum pulled in nearly $575 million worldwide, director Shawn Levy wanted the inevitable sequel to step up the action.

He’s more than pleased with the result: Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, out May 22. “This movie has one of the best comedic casts ever assembled, the visual effects are mind-blowing, and the story is more emotional,” he says.

Once again, museum exhibits come to life, but this time at the Smithsonian in Washington, where filming included scenes shot at the National Air and Space Museum. The D.C. setting also filmed at the Lincoln Memorial — where Honest Abe will come to “life.”

So will General Custer, Albert Einstein and a giant squid that befuddles Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley as he searches for his pal museum pieces Octavius and Jedediah, who have been shipped there.

Daley, the former night museum security guard, has become a successful gadget company CEO. But he has lost his joy and wonderment at the world. “He’s’ sort of lost his way,” Levy says. “This movie is about reclaiming himself.”

Stiller says returning for the sequel was a no-brainer. “I really had such a good time, and I liked this script — it’s better than the first film. It’s not just the comedy. It’s the fantasy element.”

Also returning: Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais. Newcomers include Christopher Guest, Hank Azaria, Eugene Levy, Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader and Enchanted’s Amy Adams, who plays famed aviator Amelia Earhart, Daley’s romantic foil. “They have a screwball romantic comedy banter, and their friendship is the heart of the movie,” Levy says.

Levy has high hopes for Museum 2, but he stops short of the word “franchise.”

“There are rumblings of another installment,” he says. “We would love to take this premise (further). But even to say there’s a likely third film is premature.

“We’re not going to jinx things.”

[/INDENT] How the hell did this movie make 500+ million? Seriously? It was horrible. >< I like Ben Stiller - well, I’m trying to like him. He has a few really hilarious roles, but more often than not, I’m finding myself squirming when I watch his movies. They’re awkwardly funny, not really funny. /shudder

I didn't find #1 remarkably funny, and have never been a Ben Stiller fan either, but I did find it somewhat entertaining. I've been fascinated with tiny objects all my life, and the illusion of seeing those tiny soldiers and Indians come to life captured my attention. If the movie is done well, such fanciful things can make a movie much more enjoyable for me, than it might have been otherwise.

But overall, I don't have a strong sense of anticipation for the sequel. I have to say it might be Amy Adams that convinces me in the long run...she's adorable...but enough to get me to the theater...not sure.

I actually liked the first one. Gypsy and I have watched it a few times, and I can't stand Ben Stiller most of the time. Wouldn't think about watching it at the theater cuz we never go, but I'm sure it's one we'll pick up on DVD. I look at them as semi-educational historical comedy. There've been a few times I've used it to remind Gypsy about a historical figure while we are studying.

LoL Gypsy and I watched this the other night since she got it for xmas. It was okay at best. Nowhere near as good as the first one in my opinion anyway. I was hoping for more Robin Williams, and he was in it, but not nearly enough to counter the time spent watching Ben Stiller.

I thought this one was WAY funnier than the first. The first was like awkward funny like 'Meet the Parents'. This had us rolling in some parts. Like when the paintings came to life and the diner waiter busted one of the coke glasses to help Larry out. Mike was howling at that. I don't know, great kid movie. The Jonas brothers cupids though...blergh.
