We were talking about Shepherds Pie and weird international crap on another board. Found this recipe and this delightful story.

DINUGUAN (Blood Stew)

1 lb Pork, diced
2 tb Oil
2 Cloves garlic, minced
1 Onion, diced
1/4 lb Pork liver, diced
1/2 c Vinegar
2 tb Patis (fish sauce)
1 ts Salt
1/4 ts MSG (optional)
1 1/2 c Broth
1 c Frozen pigs blood
2 ts Sugar
3 Hot banana peppers
1/4 ts Oregano (optional)

1. Cover pork with water and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from broth and
dice. Save 1-1/2 cups of broth.

2. In a 2-quart stainless steel or porcelain saucepan, heat oil and saute
garlic and onions for a few minutes. Add pork, liver, patis, salt and MSG.
Saute for 5 minutes more.

3. Add vinegar and bring to a boil without stirring. Lower heat and
simmer uncovered until most of the liquid has evaporated.

4. Add broth. Simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in blood and sugar; cook
until thick, stirring occasionally to avoid curdling.

5. Add hot banana peppers and oregano and cook 5 minutes more. Serve hot.

That's right, blood stew. Pig's blood stew. My mother lied to me for YEARS telling me it was 'chocolate meat'. So wrong. =(

My mom goes to this Filipino place in Dallas all the time. They make all kinds of Filipino food. I refuse to eat any of it. My mom makes it all the time, and I always refused to eat 90% of it. She loves all kinds of that rot. I don't know if she's ever eaten Blood Stew or not, I'll ask.

Yeah I hate filipino food. Growing up people were like, 'WOW all that lumpia!' and I was like /gag. I got sick of it fast. Pansette is the win if its made right.

Eh, I dont like lumpia much. My mother makes this golden mushroom dish for me though. How much does my mother love me, check this out.

I'm about 7 years old and my love for mushrooms has been discovered. My mother found this recipe out of a magazine and she cut it out, laminated it (god she laminated everything back then) and made it for me. She makes it for me whenever we see each other and after Vebran left last year she came to stay with us for a week. I swear to god, she made this dish EVERY SINGLE DAY for me. She made SO MUCH that she got those cute little disposal tupperware lunch things and froze me portions with rice. It got so that everytime I sat down at work with a sack, everyone was like, 'your mom's visiting again, huh?' She would cut up mango for me too.

Golden Mushroom Chicken

2-3 lbs chicken - thighs and breasts are best
2-3 cans of goldend mushroom soup
a FUCKTON of mushrooms
2 little bottles of sliced pimentos

Bake chicken for 30 mins. Mix soup, mushrooms and pimentos in a bowl and layer on top of the chicken. Bake another 30 mins or so, depending on how much chicken you have.

Eat with steamed rice. FUCKING LOVE THIS DISH.

My parents grew up in the Philipines so they LOVE Filipino food.

Sadly, I have yet to find any that I've actually enjoyed. lol

My mother loved to eat all kinds of crap I would not force my worst enemy to eat.
Liver and onions (I know, not that wierd but I can't even stand the smell of liver)
Cow brains, scrambled with eggs (I had to leave the house when she made that.)
Head cheese (/shudder)
Chicken butts (We went to a new supermarket and they had a package of turkey butts in the meat section, Mom actually started drooling right there in the store.)

Ew. You guys have tried some wierd stuffs. lol. The only thing "out of the ordinary" that Ive ever tried (and I really wouldnt even call it wierd, a lot of people have tried it) is alligator tail, and its really good battered and fried. Tastes like chicken. Whodathunkit?

Im from the south, and I cant lie that souther foods are my favorite. Id give up steak and potatoes (tho I like those too) any day for a pan of homemade biscuits and gravy, bacon and sausage, eggs, and a pan of homefries, and those who have never tried those should. They are easy to make, just cut a potato in small, thin round layers, and fry them in oil, some of the really thin ones actually resemble potato chips, but homemade. Add salt. They are yummy. Or fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, mustard greens ( I dont liek any other greens tho, these are just sweet enough that if you cook them with Bacon grease or pork fat they are really really good) and diced potatoes.

Miracle Whip is NOT mayo, I'm sorry. It's a salad dressing base and is just some purely nasty crap.

Mae, that chicken mushroom meal sounds awesome!

My grandmother used to make what she called beef bone soup... which, while it had beef bones in it, also had pigs feet and tripe! I could never eat it.

Sorry, Nalla, that's a big yuk to biscuits and gravy for me. I don't like any of the thick gravies and that white stuff is the worst. My loathing of gravy is the reason why I wouldn't touch poutin (sp?) with someone else's mouth. Bleach.

Ixnay the imentopay and it sounds great - is this like cream of mushroom with extra mushrooms and some chicken? It sounds awesome.
