<-- noob

So I've got a years worth of hosting which is getting dusty cos I don't have a scoobie what to do. Vex was gonna make me a website but then was unable to, but I'm still without one months later (yes, I slack)

I know how to host my artwork on it, but beyond that I'm clueless. I just want a gallery where I/other people can add comments if they so wish. A nice Front Page with perhaps a blog space thingy and links to the other parts of the site (thats probably obvious lol). And a page where people can contact me for commisions or whatever. And it's gotta be easy to update once its made too.

Any ideas on how to go about this, or what program to use?

Drupal is the Content Management System I use, and is also free. Drupal is a little harder to work with than Joomla, but a LOT more flexible. If you're not sure what you're doing, you might try Joomla first to get used to working with CMSs, then if it's not flexible enough for your needs, you can switch to Drupal. That's what I did, anyway.

Oh websites. I have a sick twisted thing for those and I'm always changing what mine looks like. Thats why I haven't gone to Vex. I'm scared I'd get this awesome website and then 3 months later be like I Want a new one now. ROFL

Here's some ideas that might help ya figure out what you want. :)

Word Press is pretty good. Has free plugins for things like galleries you could add as well. Pretty customizable too. Adiene has a pretty example of a wordpress site. Of course I don't know how easy it was to make that. I think Vex made it for her since she's the master of webdesign.

I know Diabolica from SMMO (does she post here too? lol) uses Word Press and has a nice little gallery. http://mysticalrenderings.com/

I always loved Dragonsnails website http://www.dragonsnail.com/ (and her amazing talent and art!). I love how its a forum, yet gallery at the same time with the little thumbnails of the artwork. But she uses Burning Board which I believe is an expensive forum you have to purchase to get all the cool features. There is Burning Board lite which I believe is free.

CGSociety does something similar on there forums (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=132) but it looks like they use vBulletin. I've never used vBulletin before so no clue how easy or hard it is to work with or customize.

Those 2 sites are cool with the thumbails, but I'm not sure if that would work really well for a showcase gallery to display your artwork since folks would have to go through every page to see it all.

My wesbite is soley html/css stuff but very easy and simple since I wasn't in the mood to make anything super fancy and just wanted to stick something simple this time. http://www.nianyasdesigns.com
The gallery is simply an iframe with my coppermine gallery. I *think* Coppermine has the ability to let people comment on pictures too. The template was a free one (for personal or commercial use). I just went in with Dreamweaver and added my stuff to personalize it some.
