(CNN) -- Capt. Phil Harris of the Discovery Channel show "The Deadliest Catch" died Tuesday of complications from a stroke suffered late last month. He was 53.
Harris, the tattooed and gruff captain of the Cornelia Marie, was a fan favorite in the reality show about crab fishing off Alaska.
"Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him," a statement from the network said. "We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart."
Harris suffered a massive stroke on January 29 while his crew offloaded crab at St. Paul Island, Alaska.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad -- Captain Phil Harris," said a statement from his sons, Jake and Josh Harris. "Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end."

I wasn't a fan, and only watched the show once, but when I heard he had a stroke a couple weeks ago it didn't sound good. 53 is too young :(

He went through a lot of medical problems last season. I'm not even sure they're doing the show anymore, but first he had some sort of blood clot that really took him down. He came back like 6 months later but his doctor advised him after further tests (he was already readying the boat to leave again) that he could possibly die if he went out. So he handed the reins over to a senior member of the boat and they had a crappy run =/ Last I had heard was that he was rehabilitating, but then the stroke hit him. His ship's crew was amazing. All those guys are hilarious and just true salty, sea-dogs but Captain Phil was a unique guy. Both his sons worked his crew and he really seemed like a good father.

Just a shame =/

The hubby told me about him this morning, I had just read something the other day that said he was doing better. :( It's actually really upsetting and I feel horrible for his family.

yeah , poor bloke. He went thru alot of stuff last year and the year prior. Sad to see him go. Really sad :(
