Promotional Postcards

I'm going to Wordstock this weekend! It's a book festival held every year in Portland where there are a whole bunch of publishers who have yet to meet me! My goal is to network like crazy and get a better grasp on getting into the industry.

I'm printing out 4x6 postcards to hand out to prospective contacts. Here are three -- I might make one or two more:

You know, It never occured to me before, but your style would look really awesome in some children's books.

Actually, the only bites that I got from last year's Wordstock were from children's book authors.

Last year, I brought with me give-away portfolios that reflected the fantasy and sci-fi themes that I use on TAC and DA. But most of the publishers there are non-fiction and use photos and graphic design for their covers and illustrations -- they were turned off by my fantasy stuff.

So this year no chicks in chain mail bikinis riding polar bears!

Some children's books artwork is what sticks in your memory forever. I think one of my favorite books when I was little was Thumbelina, and it was because I loved the page art.. and for me to remember this book, and more specifically its art, 25 years later, is pretty good, since I don't remember most of being a kid, lol.

Those look great and I think they still cover a wide grouping of tastes!
Good luck!

Wordstock was awesome! I had better conversations with publishers this time around, and the "Bicycle Thief" picture really helped get some attention. I have follow-up and 'Thank you' emails to write, and I have to corner at least three of these people into coffee at a later point or I owe my freelance-writer-friend Cindy some sushi!

The Dark Horse guy kept coming back to the Bicycle Thief! He said to go through official channels and such, but he wanted to keep my handout portfolio instead of just taking a postcard. This might lead somewhere =)

The message that I got from Wordstock is that it is harder than ever before to get published and make a living. I need fortitude, drive, and patience to get through to my desired end. I'm going to make this work.
