Oh My Dear Lord, HELP!!
I decided today that since my children arent able to go to the school of my choice (waiting list since we are out of the city limits, and tuition (for a 4 year old, I might add) is over 600 dollars.) that I was going to homeschool my kids. Id at least try out Kindergarten, how hard can that be, right?
(ahem)
So anyway. I taught Kindergartners myself for 2 years, aside from the chaos that ensues at times, its very rewarding age, and they do great. And are very smart. So Im thinking, hey ! I can do this!
And, to top it off, while I was looking at books (that I could buy at Wal mart for cheaper) I remembered that technically the state only requires 1-12 grades, so I dont have to buy books and get them listed, because they dont have to go. Its good for them tho. So Im like, great. I dont have to go through buying books and registering them.
(ahem, again)
So its looking ok, and I go to this website. Ok, well they have a link to the QCC standards, so I can just read what it is they need to know for my state, go to the link that lists some of the cool examples, and boom! Easy as pie, right?
OMFG DO YOU REALIZE WHAT IN THE HELL THEY REQUIRE OUR BABIES TO LEARN NOW?????????????
I played with
BLOCKS
in kindergarten. This is rediculous.I havent even made it to math yet and my list is 9 pages long in word.
oh dear
i think now they start learning english in kindergarten.
The Well Trained Mind
A Guide to Classical Education at Home
Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer
This is an excellent book for any parent to own, whether they want to home school or enrich their child's education. I highly recommend it.
She has about 8 weeks left, and they are at this point preparing them for 1st grade.
She can read, write full sentences, add and subtract any number combination between one and ten, is learing about FACTORS, (OMG I didn't know what a factor was until oh 2nd or 3rd), can come up with a sentence and sound out each word then write it. They have taught them how to spell, with a program called Jonny can Spell, it is amazing, simply amazing.
I was taught not to eat the paste, to put up my blocks, abc's and 123's, and how to cut a straight line in K.
I spoke with the counselor, not sure as that my child could assimilate so much knowledge at such a young age, and she informed me that by the time my child graduates in 2017, she will have the same education that a person graduating from a BS program would today.
I was floored...
Oh and good luck on the home schooling, I don't have the patience past pre-k.
Oh yeah. Thats gonna be great.
At least Im taking this oppurtunity to by used college books and teaching myself some of the basics as well. I know it wont be counted as credits, but when I take the placement test thats gonna save me at least a year. :) yay fer lernin!
It is not the isolated thing of yester-year...
It is this whole huge colony of people. They have play groups, classes like Spanish and phonics, sports groups, P.E. sessions, and all sorts of things.
Home school is no longer, learning to write on a slate and calisthinics in the back yard.
don't homeschool your kids :(
AS long as I keep them enrolled in city programs and city sports, then they should be ok at this age. Me and drade did say we'd like them to go to a good high school, if only because Prom's and first valentine dances are something that they will need, not just want, and while a 4 yr old is just happy going to the park for his "P E class", a Jr high child is gonna want more. I just want to shelter them for a wee bit longer :) I know I cant protect them from everything, but I want them to go to a private school, and atm, that just aint gonna happen. I can teach them what they need to know, and it wont cost me 1200 plus for a private school to do it.
Home schooling isnt cheap either, so it wouldnt be a matter of being poor. Kids will be cruel no matter how your schooled, the important thing is to teach your kids that kids will be kids, and to defend yourself (cause I didnt) and dont expect a teacher or principal to take care of it, because they wont. My kids will defend themselves. I had to go to ISS (in school suspension) whether I fought back or not. My kids wont be like I was. And they definatly will be taught thats how kids are.
Don't homeschool your kids. The worst thing you can do is shell them like that forcing them only to interact with mom. Sheltering children is not the answer, forcing them to start depending on themselves and figuring shit out is. And I hardly believe private school is the answer, in LA private school was the place you didn't want to be since it was a last ditch effort to 'fix' their shitty kid(s).
Dude. Read Kaytanas post.
Ill say it again lol.
Homeschooling IS NOT the isolated thing some people make it out to be. I was homeschooled. I was put together with A LOT of other homeschooled children, we studied sign language and spanish TOGETHER, we played together, and we went on more field trips than I ever went on in school.
And again, Im not homeschooling to "shelter" my kids -- Im homeschooling for other reasons, like for 1) Georgia has THE LOWEST SAT scores than most of the other states and 2) Private schooling is WAY too expensive for a kindergartner and 3) Ive taught kindergarten, so its not like Im goin into this totally unawares, and 4) I want them to be able to say the Pledge of Alliegance and do bible study, because thats how we believe.
So I dont see whats so isolated about it. My kids arent actually gonna be "home" all that time, its just what the name of the schooling type is :) We arent hermits or anything :)
Just thought it was confusing that I had mentioned school then said I was homeschooled, was clarifying.
As far as Bible studies go, thats just a difference in personal accomplishments. A private school would teach them that. I cant afford private school, so Ill do it. Its a firm belief of mine that if you want your kids to learn something in particular, you dont send them to someone else to teach it, you do it yourself.
Example, girl i went to school with right, her little brother starts dating this sweet home schooled girl who started the 10th grade. First time in a public school.
Pregnant in 6 months. If that.
Not saying its a bad thing, not saying DONT DO IT. What i plan to do as a parents (choices are the win) is to do side projects at home with catherine in addition to what she learns in school. I'm not above putting her in Sylven learning either (that after school program for kids who need help or need more challenges).
Veb wants to put her in karate or whatever when she's about 8-10. Religion...that's something she'll decide for herself but we're teaching her the christian fundementals. Good luck, nalla =)
As far as why? Just because I want them to know how to defend themselves if the time comes. I didnt. And because of it I endured a lot that I might not have to endure. Thats all.
