I saw it Saturday night. I liked it a lot, but there were some things I didn't like about it.
Like ... when you see a giant alien being rising out of the ground, you run away half-assed, looking over your shoulder every 2 feet, running about 1/4 the speed you'd ordinarily be running at? Hell with that, if I were there, I would tuck chin to chest and run like hell.
I didn't like the ending =\ I think the son should have died.
The ferry scene was terrifying!! Of course, I'm scared of boats so that's one reason.
War of the Worlds
I cant blieve no one has posted aobut this yet...

I had heard it was 2 hours of Dakota Fanning screaming. Is this true?

I want to see this movie for 2 reasons. One, Tom Cruise is hawthawthawt and two, Dakota looks just like my neice, I swear. Same bug eyes and blonde hair. Kind of creepy. But sweet of course.

I was on the edge of my seat through the whole thing...up until the very abrupt happy ending. I have never read the book, or seen the original movie, so I didn't know what to expect. To me the ending just seemed to come out of nowhere. For the most part I liked it, though.

Yeah, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. I liked it. :)
Even though Tom Cruise is a wack job now.

My bf sat through the whole thing and didn't flinch once.

Definitely didn't flinch, although I was very pleased that Morgan Freeman narrated it. The clothes dropping from the sky was fantasticly disturbing and the basement part where Dakota Fanning sings the lullaby while Cruse kills Tim Robbins was nicely done.
We bought it but eh, between 1-10, I'd give it a 7.

I thought this was pretty true to life... I mean.. I would have ran like hell too, but so many people would be wondering what the fuck it was that they'd keep checking over their shoulder to see it. They'd run as far as needed to get out of it's path of destruction, then stop and watch it. I thought that was pretty realistic to what many people would do.

I thought this movie was another Steven Speilburg fesitval of lets make a horrific movie and then right at the end he got tired of blowing stuff up so he just ended it.
I will give credit that the special effects were fantastic and spraying blood on the world was a nice scary effect, but all in all I would not watch it again.

Yeah the creepy blood and the vagina looking thing that sucked people up into the tripods were cool and disturbing, even for Spielberg, but you can't really blame him for the abruptness of the ending. That's how Wells wrote it. The common cold wiped out the big bad aliens, thus saving the humans to further degrade its home planet =D Anticlimatic but theoretically, it makes sense. It wiped out the Aztecs (i hope that's right), why not a big powerful alien race that planets their spaceships millions of years ago so they could conquer and claim the planet? =D

I watched it for the first time last night. It was much better than I expected it to be. I thought the reactions of the characters were spot on. Yes Dakota screamed through the whole movie...but lets be honest here, 7 year old girls are apt to scream hysterically when watching people blow up and their worlds fall apart. I even thought Tom did a good job and I hate that guy. I guess if you didn't know what was coming in the ending, it would seem sudden...but as Mae says, that's how it was written. I enjoyed it overall...even if it made me anxious when I went to bed last night.
