Will you be developing your own film and making prints?

I would probably go digital. I've done the whole darkroom thing and the developing and printing my own work (Ok...so yearbook for 3 years might not count)...but I've done it and if I ever got into photography again, I would go digital.

Both have their advantages/disadvantages and costs. I personally prefer film to digital, though I will be getting a digital camera here soon as well. If you develop your own stuff (via film), there's just a certain satisfaction and fun to it...however, it's can be expensive to set up a good darkroom. If you're going to have a photo shop develop for you, it'll be easier, but can be costly in the long run as well.

Digital cameras are more expensive up front, but you don't have to pay for film, paper, chemicals, or just processing at the store. You don't have to print everything out either...if you take a full disc worth of photos, and two of them turn out, then you can just print those two. Home photo printers are getting cheaper, and many stores offer digital printing as well.

It just depends what kind of work you want to put into it, and how much you really want to spend!

Good luck! :D

Yep what Nath said. I guess it depends on if you just want to do the extra work or not. If you plan on doing anything digital to your photos, I still suggest the digi cam. This way you dont have to worry about paying for the film, paper, developing just to scan it in. If you get what I mean. Just get as high of a megapixel as you can afford. :)

I would recommend starting out with digital. If you already have a lot of other things on your plate, you can't beat the speed of a digital camera. There is probably a lab near you that will print your photos onto traditional photographic paper, so I wouldn't let that concern you. You will be able to get instant feedback on your photos, and will probably learn what you are doing much faster since you can correct any mistakes on the fly.

While traditional film photography is time consuming, and more expensive in the long run, there is a certain satisfaction that many get from doing it themselves, and seeing that image appear on the paper (black & white that is, color paper has to be processed in complete darkness, so you don't get to watch it).

I shoot film because that is what I learned on, and I can afford the incremental film costs much more easily than I can afford to shell out the cash for the digital camera that I would like to get.

ah, both good things to think about. I dont have a dark room myself, but i may take some classes as well.

digital does sound like a good plan, as long as i can get the quality print out and such. Maybe if i like it with the digital camera i will find a low priced - possibly ebay- traditional camera and ;learn with it as well.

so for didgital camera, megapixels is what to look for?

Megapixels...the more the merrier...and also find out about how many pictures per memory card ( can always buy extras or upgrade I believe [I dont have a cam yet, but I would suggest finding out about the memory as well.] )

The biggest drawback to digital is that there are no longer any "happy accidents" that can happen when using traditional film. Sometims yuo take a photo wrong, or develop it wrong... or something just screws up that makes the image better in some way. With digital, it's pretty much just a snapping of the photo and deleting iamges taht don't turn out exactly how you want them.

I'd say get a digital camera and get a book on traditional photography. That'll explain the terminology and all of it will sitll apply to using digital (at least in regards to actually taking the photos).
