I shot someone last night

I live in a house with 2 of my friends. In the middle of the night last night someone came in through our unlocked back door and tried to steal a computer that was in our living room. My puppy woke me up and i heard moving around. I grabbed my 9mm that i keep next to me and walked through the house not expecting to actually see anything.. I walked into the only entrance/exit to the living room and saw him trying to unplug the monitor. I cocked the gun and told him not to move. He saw me and broke for the door. I thought he was coming after me as I was standing in the doorway so I shot him in his right leg. We live next door to a cop and he was over there within about 30 seconds and the EMT/Police were there about 5 minutes after him. No real harm was done, he didnt bleed much and it was on hardwood so it was easy enough for them to clean up. I'm not really freaked out about getting robbed as I am about how easy it was for me to shoot someone. I shot him in the leg on purpose but kinda strange to think I could have killed him.

My Commercial Sales manager had an incident just like that. About 2 months ago, a thief broke into his car and stole a about $2000 in stereo equipment. 2 weeks ago, a thief (probably the same guy, but police can't interview him yet since he still can't speak) broke into his car and was attempting to steal it. My CSM ran out and beat him with a golf club until the police showed up. When he stopped swinging the guy just oozed out of his car onto the concrete, and was limp when he was taken to the hospital. Big old blood spot in the drive way, and blood all over the car.

The PG cops told him if he killed him it was manslaughter, however as it stood it was self defense. Got to love MD laws.

I have to agree with Gylius in principle. Yes, I would be pretty fucking pissed if someone was attempting to steal my shit for the second time in two months. And I would swing a bat or golf club to bring them down. But 30 seconds with a golf club is a long fucking beating.

If it were me, absolutely I'd swing more than once. I don't know if he's on drugs and I don't want to be known as the guy killed with his own baseball bat trying to fend off an attacker. But after the guy goes down, and you know he's down, then just. stop. hitting. him. Of course right after I would surely break his knees/hands so he never stole from anyone ever again. But that isn't life threatening.

As for the shooting, it would be much easier to kill someone with a pistol. I applaud you for having the nerve and focus to aim for his leg. I'm positive my hands would be shaking too much to aim for anything but center of mass. And if he's rushing towards you inside your own house (<10 yards), that first shot better count.

Ok I'll concede about someone outside your home breaking into a car. You dont' kill them for sure, but I'd still beat the hell otu of them. My points are about someone in my house. I have no sympathy for anyone breaking into my home. I'm just sick of criminals being turned into victims. Of women murdering children and crying drepression and getting off. It seems like this kind of shit happens constantly, and the fact someone can break in my home and I can go to jail for kicking their ass really chaps me. It's the same principle really as the lawsuits over every fucking retarded thing imaginable, and people that bitch and complain about a speeding ticket when they were....speeding. Take responsibilty for your shit.

Thank you Blazn for shooting a man in the leg because it has spawned a great forum thread. You should visit him in the hospital and let him know that. I'm sure it will make him feel better.

Texas rules about defending your property,

my ex-husband one night realized the motion sensor lights were on in the front yard and went outside with a bat

he saw a guy trying to steal our car

he took the bat and pumelled him on the concrete driveway literally bashed his brains in

there was a pool of blood running down the driveway unto the street

he beat the robber to about 2 inches of his life

the neighbors called the cops and i didnt hear anything until i heard the sirens and got up

the would be robber left in an ambulance sirens flaring

he got out of the hospital 2 weeks later

and my ex husband got a pat on the back from cops and the news came and interviewed him =/

go Texas

i was so scared for my son and i for months after as the guy was a g thug

Yeah pretty much....Where im from thieves are more or less hung.....If you catch someone outside in your car at night....You can more or less go out there with a ball bat and beat the guy to death and the law wont say shit when they arrive (Especially in coryell county)

Texas is pretty hardcore when it comes to criminals.

Gylius and Nards are talking about reasonable force. I dont know, if it were me, I'd cold cock the bastard a couple times to make sure he doesn't leave the scene or hell, come near me for hitting him with a golf club. But if the guy is clearly not able to get away and he continued to pummel him...well then there goes your reasonable force, i would think. I'm not above braining someone with a stapler here at work and then running out the back door. Fuck office property - I'm out the door.
Gylius 19 years ago
Ya, I'm talking about reasonable force and what kind of person you are. It takes a fucked up individual to beat someone to death with a blunt object. Squeezing a trigger is one thing. You could kill someone and not even mean to. There is no way you can 'accidently' kill someone with a golf club. Let's look at this objectively.

A person could swing a golf club, every 2 or 3 seconds? Conservatively btw. So in 12 seconds thats 4 swings. Im guessing if you hit a person in the head, one shot is enough to go unconscious. Two, definitely unconscious. Now 30 seconds, that's 10-15 swings.

Think about that for a second. You're beating a person who is obviously unconscious at 10 seconds, for another 20? Come the fuck on now. This person didn't threaten your life. They were in your car.

I've never thought of myself as particuarly caring about most people, but beating someone to death because they were going to steal the $200 Ipod I keep in my car. No thanks. I'd rather not have a killing on my jaded conscience.

You did the right thing, Blazyn. As much as most guys like to talk like they are all hard, killing someone is not something you would just get over with a good night's sleep.

I know around here you just cant cap someone for being in your house. You have to believe your life is in immediate jeopardy before you can use deadly force. Usually someone with a knife 10 feet away isnt gonna cut it in a court of law. You did say he ran towards you to get out of the house, you could say he raised the knife and thought he was going to stab you, but then you better hope forensics can't prove his arm was not raised when you capped him. In your case, you did the right thing by just shooting him in the leg. I really think killing him would have f'd you up pretty bad.

I'm with Gylius on the beating someone thing, too. That was excessive force. I know I have had a few cars broken into and at the time I think to myself if I would have caught the person doing it I would have beat the shit out of him. I would like to think that was just the anger of the moment talking and not what I would really do. Stealing is always wrong, but you never know the circumstances. That young thug looking kid could be stealing from you to buy drugs...or he could be without any family and trying to get some money to freakin eat. I wouldn't want to half kill someone because they were hungry and couldn't see any other options.

AHAHAHAHAHA!

aside from that, at least no one will ever break into your house again unlocked door or not. I'd say the word would get around about you shooting him and junkies will stay clear!

For th record. My CSM didn't hit him in the head once. It was all body shots. His head was up by the ignition column as he was leaning into the car with the door open trying to get it started. His body was for the most part exposed outside of the car, and he went to town. Its much harder to inflict a fatal wound to the body, but he still beat him unconcious due to the pain. That I have no problem with. And your right Gylius, it only takes a one good shot to the head to kill someone. However I am good with busting up a theif's ribs all day long. Shins, arm's, its all fair. And I feel the guy got what he deserved.

Just wack the criminal in the wrists and knees. They wont be able to hurt you if you break their wrists or arms and once you shatter a knee they will be unable to run anywhere. After that, there is not much they can do but wait for an ambulance.
Gylius 19 years ago
I dunno, something seems shady about the 'all body shots.' I wasn't there, but how does the inside of the car get covered in blood if it was all body shots. And I'm guessing based of the angle you're claiming it would have been all shots in the back. Furthermore, not being able to speak for a period of days or whatever after the beating? I'm not sure if there's any place to be hit other than the head/neck to have that happen. If anyone can prove otherwise, feel free to say anything because I honestly have no idea.

This is getting off topic, but I don't trust your CSM at all. He seems like the type of guy I wouldn't let be around my kids if I had any, but who knows? Maybe he is a nice guy, but I'll have my reservations about his character with that story.

Wow. We had our house broken into once while we were asleep upstairs. Neither of us woke up...no idea what I would have done had I come downstairs and found someone in my house.

A couple of years ago my hubby had this crazy fear that I would get attacked getting into my car after grocery shopping or something like that and went to buy me some pepper spray. He came home with something a little closer to bear spray. This stuff will not only sting their eyes, but basically incapacitate them for about 20-30 mins...even someone hyped up on drugs. And if they do still happen to get away it permanently dyes their skin hot pink.
Den 19 years ago
LOL - Never knew there was anything like 'bear spray' till I saw it on that new tv show, 'Men in Trees'. What's the reason behind the pink dye?
Doubt we could carry that in California. You have to take a class and get a permit to use cs spray (mace).
Sarah 19 years ago
The pink dye is nearly permenant and is almost impossible to wash off. It helps in finding the perpetrator. Just look for the guy with the pink face.
ROzbeans 19 years ago
Or in prosecutions boss' case - the guy with the broken back and ribs.
Den 19 years ago
I get that the pink dye is good for finding criminals...but I thought 'bear' spray was created to fend off bears...?
ROzbeans 19 years ago
I'd be embarassed to have pink on me if i were a bear.
Lillaanya 19 years ago
Hehe...yes bear spray is for bears...this is like some sort of military issue stuff he got, made for self protection against people, but uses the same stuff thats in bear spray. Never had to use it yet, but I'm really curious to see it work lol.
Den 19 years ago
lol - I took a class to get the cs spray, a few years back, and thankfully never had to use it...but after the can expired my curiousity got the better of me, and I sprayed it in the shower. I could feel the effects even then, though fortunately nothing severe, but my eyes did water.

Oh, I wasn't in the shower at the time...I just stuck my arm in, through the crack in the door, and sprayed, closed the door quickly...but still must have got some in my eyes.
