Rislynn - WiP

I can't really see anything wrong with the picture, but it just doesn't grab your attention much. Not bad, but not good either. I don't know what's wrong with it other than to say...it's just not right. Sorry for the vague reply, but...it's good, but rather dull. Maybe it's just the colors. *shrug* Then again, it is a dark elf.

overall you have a nice setup, I think adding some contrast between the girl and the background would help a little. The weed plants are very bright against the very dark ground. I think darkening those up would make them fit better.

perhaps dodge in a little bit of highlights in the armor / hair / face. Its very flat-shaded.

if you aren't comfortable with the dodge tool, you can create a new layer on top of everything, fill it with a dark gray, and set the layer mode to overlay. changing your shade of gray from super dark to super light will drastically change the effect of the overlay, but it will help deepen the lines in your work and make it pop a little more.

good start though.

Welp, I c/c in the sandwich style. What stands out, what is good, what could be better and a suggestion, no matter how small, on how to fix it. Being vague and saying, 'its not good' doesn't seem helpful, to be honest.

I like the overall tone, the darkness and bland color of it all. Its unique and I think you can use that in a positive way. While I was waiting for it to download (my work internet sucks) I thought the purple flowers at first were butterflies, but I like that the colors are almost hidden.

I'd maybe darken the shadows on the ground a little more, blend in the shadows from the trees and then accent small spots of flowers and then do a soft but vibrant dodge on the purple flowers next to her hands. In fact, you could have her right hand holding some - you could even fade those like she touched them and they died? Then the ones by her left hand could be beautiful and vibrant, right before she touches them.

Or something like that. Overall I like the color tone - it implies death and foreboding - you can really play it up =)

I'd look into some bark texture brushes or something I hate the fact the tree is just a brown blob :( if you are going to rerender this then I would go in and adjust the bump setting a bit
Brushing in highlights and shadows on the armor/skin and hair will make her stand out much better.
I do like the skin tone, I think the highlights will help it look better once ya get them in.

The tree bugged me too, but short of buying a different tree and texture to go with it, that was the best of my choices, I figured I could improve it ( hopefully) in postwork.

I would love to know what brushes you use too!

ok, Ive started to play with some of the suggestions above.. I really like the idea of the flower, but i think the one in her hand is laying wrong, so trying to figure out how to adjust it so it looks more natural.. and dead

I darkened the weeds/grass in the background, just gave them a slight grey /green tint that I think makes them blend a bit more

I played with the lighting slightly, I think she stands out more but not sure now if its too bright...?

some other slight touch ups as well, adding highlights and shadows and some adjustments to her hair so far.

As far as brushes I use I made mine from some freebie textures in the RMP free section. Just dowloaded them grayscaled em adjusted the levels and then turned them into brushes. I thought I saw some on DA or RMP before but I don't see them now =x

oh wow - i went through from the first to the last image and the changes made were awesome! Went from "ok" to "good" to "wow!" I love the detail of the flowers dying. Adds a bit of "story" to the image!
