28 is 20% younger than 35. 1/5 is pretty significant. I met a girl I thought was younger than me when I was 20. Imagine my surprise when she turned out to be just shy of 10 years older. The very fact that she looked so young made it hard for me to ever see her as her age.

Same thing with this guy. I just can't see him as Captain Kirk. It's the same issue I had with Cyclops and Jean Grey in X-Men. He looked way too young for her.

They could've at least updated the hair instead of sticking with the old 1966 haircut.

Older women/younger men FTW!!!
And its not 1966 hair...it's Vulcan hair...that transcends time!!

Whatever. That's your personal experience but it doesn't make me wrong or you right. In any case...

Yeah Sylar as Spock is freaking me out a bit, but I am friggin diggin on Simon Pegg being Scotty. /squee!

I can see Simon pulling that off pretty well. Kirk, Jr. just doesn't mesh. Their ranks are pretty much analagous to US Naval ranks. Captain (O6) is the highest rank before Admiral. In Army terms, that's a Colonel, just below General. While not unheard of, it is extremely rare for anyone to hold such ranks before their mid-late 30s. The youngest Colonel and Captain I've heard of were 28, but even 41 is considered young for a full bird Colonel.

It's hard to give people authoritative respect when they look like kids. It's probably why there's an Age of Candidacy. A ship's captain really has to command respect or everyone's fucked.

I still don't really classify her as "older" because of how young she looked and felt.

I maintain they could've done something to update the look without offending continuity. Kinda shows just how much I actually don't watch the series though, eh?

It's a movie. It's called suspending reality. I'm going to enjoy it for what it is or at least what it isn't - campy 60's sci fi remake and not nitpick the fuck out of it.

Well, there's already a suspension of disbelief just for the fact that it's Star Trek. Everyone's got their suspension threshold, and mine happens to get triggered by highly implausible ages. Other examples include movies where little kids with extensive martial arts knowledge knock guys out just because they have skill. A four year old kicking a thug in the face isn't gonna knock him out, regardless of his training.

The best unrealistic movies still have a lot of realism in them. It helps fuel the fantasy by keeping a parallel with reality.

I'm not sure what I think about Eric Bana being the bald bad guy. I am looking forward to the movie though, at least Kirk is hot.

Shit, I just squeed out loud.

I don't give a FUCK if he doesn't look like Kirk. I'd eat that fucker up with a spoon, damnit.

It's SPACE CAMP!

HAHA oh fuck is that Harold? They need to make a Harold and Kumar Go to the Moon to get some green cheese munchies.

I grew up being a huge fan of Star Wars and Star Trek. My father forced my brother and I to watch the old reruns of Star Trek when I was in elementary school, and even took me to see ‘Star Trek, the Motion Picture’ for my very first movie. Don’t remember much except that my fucking cousin Desmond ate all the popcorn. I think I cracked a molar on the kernels, too.

Anyway, I’m excited to see an update version of it. I have high hopes. =)

I just can't get behind this. I was a huge fan as a kid - not as much now, but this just doesn't look or feel anything like Star Trek to me. I might give it a try.

I just want to hump the new Kirk.

‘That’s going to be bigger than peanut butter.’
My husband turned to me and said, ‘Space is…death and darkness wrapped in…peanut butter.’

Always mocking me. (eyes narrow)

It's a prequel - they're not high ranking officers, they're just cadets are the start of their career.
That makes sense, and if that's the case (taking your word for it since I haven't been keeping up on this), I take back my issue with Kirk. I was under the impression it was just a remake during the same time period as the first series.

Fascinating!

I LOVED it!

Don't waste your money on that piece of gosee known as Wolverine. Save it for Trek! Here's a movie using a prequel the right way. It doesn't completely confine itself to what we know happens. Haven't had this much fun, in a sold out theatre, since Hellboy.
