Our local comp USA closed down about 4 years ago.

I guess its been a slow dying process for them.

Internet shopping is so much cheaper, especially if you plan ahead.

Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc are only good for "oh shit I need a part or I'm fuxxored" and have been so since ~2002 or 2003.

CompUSA's one saving grace for a while was the fact that they were one of the only Brick and Mortar shops that sold Macs and related accessories/software.

I remember when the iMac debuted, and people were leaving CompUSA in droves with them.

That said, the only hardware I bought from them within the last 4 years or so were a pair of power supplies - that "oh shit" purchase mentioned before - and a USB game controller.

I was in my local store this past weekend, and none of the employees would talk about the closing.

A guy I know who's decently connected within Apple said most Comp stores' Mac stock will be shipped to nearby Apple stores.

we have two Fry's Electronics here, and i think theyre great. about half of the store ( abotu the size of walmart) is dedicated to computers and computer components.. almost as good a selection as Newegg.com and awesome sales... Im really gonna miss them when we move, I dont think theres a computer store within an hours drive from my new place

I love living in Houston... we have THREE Fry's. Two are in suburbs right outside the city but it's the metroplex =)

I used to like CompUSA even if they treated you like a criminal with someone constantly at the door to check your bags and purse and such. And this was in Clear Lake which is a pretty darn nice area IMO. You could catch some decent sales there though, and they had a nice large selection. Fry's opened a block-ish away and that one folded. Personally I prefer the smaller shops or I drive a bit to the MicroCenter if Fry's doesn't have it.

god i miss microcenter too!

the wal-marts here assign 80y/o folks or people in wheel chairs to guard the doors and check your receipts. its so lame.

I worked for a CompUSA for a couple years when I got out of college. At the time I worked there the store was a big hit cause there wasn't a Best Buy near. And we were one of few locations to carry Macs.

The store security always did seem a bit extreme, till you worked in one. The theft was unreal, we'd forever find open packages laying around. It got bad enough that we hired off duty police officers, and one time they tackled a lady in front of the store that had stuffed all kinds of items in her clothes and tried to leave. Fun times! Not to mention the guy that tried to use an very obviously fake credit card, and was stupid enough to pass over his drivers license.

Tthe best thing there was the family/friend atmosphere. Nothing beat having your GM head to the bar with you after work

I've been into a Fry's once... seemed awful expensive to me, maybe I was looking at the wrong things (only checked out some games)...

Frys and Microcenter suck.

There aren't any Frys east of the Mississippi - or at least in the North East.

I hate our CompUSA, they have shitty service and never anyone around to actually help you when you want to spend your money. We stopped by to see if they had anything for sale over the weekend - of course not. Fuckers.

Our CompUSA closed last year. I bought tons of paper for the printer on clearance! Up until this past year, i had never heard of Fry's. My hubby forgot his cell phone charger when we went to Vegas this past year and the hotel send him to Fry's to replace it. He loved it there and came back with all kinds of stuff we didn't need

I forget when they closed ours but I miss it too. Now I just wait for the spring computer Expo if i want parts and it's not a desperate situation.

We went over today and most everything is 10 to 30 percent off. I picked up a drive enclosuer for 20 bucks and the picked up some small shit. The tvs were all 15-20 percent off which is not a bad deal if you want an lcd.

There is a FRY's in Atlanta and a microcenter. Ill use the internet to buy things unless im really in a pinch and have for years retail is never a good deal. New Egg is all one needs.

Went last night after I found a 25 dollar gift card while cleaning.

OMG looks like a billion vultures picked the place clean.
All boxed Apple hardware is GONE
The displays - the ones with busted keys and dirty screens etc - are only 5% off

The game selection is abysmal
Books are mostly gone, the CPU case displays are trashed (and yet only marked down 10%, feh)

I picked up a few movies for 7 bucks each and left.
