Tinkerer WIP

This is a piece that I haven't touched in about a year and a half. I have some WIPs in my scrapbook section in DA, and when I was looking to develop a piece for my portfolio, this stuck out. Right now it's in grisaille form, but it will be focused and realized with discernible material textures, light, and expression.

I am saying all of this because I want Roz to kick my ass if I get off track. I tend to freak out and bring a piece to a close before I realize it's full potential. I promise to patiently model all of the elements so that a traveling eye can find entertainment. I do love a painterly texture, so I'll say in advance that I don't intend for everything to be fully-focused and plastic.

You know what to do if the need arises...

Totally changing my mind on the butterflies for now. I'll keep them on a hidden layer until I correct the weaknesses of the picture. I have included a "red pen of death" stage in the interest of complete disclosure:

So neat to see how far this image has come!

Are you going to be doing any detail outside the window? I agree with lessa, some butteryflys out there! :D

I think I'm going to make the outside detail with slight washes -- more of an intimation of form than anything that will flatten my picture. I keep changing my mind about the butterflies. Now that I'm developing the bird, I may have one in the window or something. Since the bird has more detail, I don't need as much help from extra elements:

hehe another thing I was tempted to suggest..just a faint touch of color coming from the outside and on the butterflys.. I was afraid it would strike you as too Wizard of Oz.. ><

but.. I love the butterfly on the back of his chair..

I'd say one or two butterflies tops. Any more than that feels cluttered to me, and takes away from the actual tinkering of the piece. Just my opinion of course ;)

I like the idea of a second bird on the window sill - as though a birdie has taken his mate to the tinkerer and waits in concern while she gets repairs :D.

I think I am going to let this go into the world. My original idea for this was something simple and humble, and I think I'll let this be as it is and move forward. I look forward to getting better with time.

All 'tinkered' out? IMO, it's beautiful. I love the detail, and the highlights that make the pieces shine, almost as if from within. I don't think you could add anything else to improve upon it. Lovely piece John.

I said what I first felt on this at dA, but wanted to also just add I am still rather delighted and humbled to watch your progress through these designs. What else do you have lurking in the pages of one of your sketchbooks that you should bring to life?

Also, when you finish a picture, do you feel tired or energized? Does the process dictate how you "recover" from the creative energy you spent? I often wonder how other artists feel when they declare a piece complete, drained? elated? satisfied? Does it depend on the weather or the alignment of the planets? LOL Just curious really and you don't have to share at all.. I am rambling again :)

Oh my God, I was angry! I had this image of flawless, razor-sharp detail in my mind -- a virtuoso technical display. I was wrestling with my drive for light and emotion, and since the piece had a distinct voice in my mind, it had to become something more simple and sentimental.

When it comes down to it, a piece is done when it refuses to accept any more work. Only later can I see the wisdom of it. When I first stopped though, I was very angry and worn out...

Now I need to use all of my research I've done with butterflies! I have so many references stored that I didn't end up using. Maybe a butterfly girl or something.

Awwww :) Sorry you felt so conflicted sweety. Maybe you could do a caterpillar-eye-view of the butterfly he will grow to be :)

Absolutely gorgeous hun. You did an amazing job and I loved watching it emerge to its final piece.

Thank you very much, SnowDragon!
