How many (painkillers) is too many?

I'm 5'6" and 210. (working on reducing that.)

My sister's 5'2" and 130(ish, guessing).

My mom's 4'10" and 150.

When I hurt, I take one 500mg Tylenol, or for tension headaches/muscle pain, one (rarely two) 200mg Ibuprofen.

My mom, on a regular basis, takes between five and eight 500mg tylenol.
My sister takes between four and six.

Am I right to be worried?

They have a higer tolerance but yeah they're taking too many. Although I'm 5'3 and take 3 aleves to help with pain. When I was 19 I'd take 1600 mg of IB for stress headaches. Just have a higher tolerance.

That's awfully high amount, no matter what your size.

You should never take more than 2 extra strength tylenol every 4 to 6 hours,( or 400mg of IB every 6 to 8) even though there are virtually no know side effects to tylenol. If you take more than the recommended dosage, you are setting yourself up to become intollerant or immune to the drug.

Also, IB is known to cause kidney and liver dysfunction. If taken at high dosages for extended periods.

Yah...definitely too much. I mean, people work up resistances to pain killers over time...I take 3 or 4 Ibuprofen, on average...3 Aleve or Tylenol, etc...but that's too many.

Once, I broke a tooth, and took....oh...a handful of Aspirin...lost my hearing for about a day. :P NOT a good plan...

Some people are just naturally resistant to pain medications - it actually is a common thing with the women in my family. I avoid taking any kind of pills as much as possible, but when I do I usually have to take twice the dosage to notice any effect. Things like Vicodin or Percocet knock a lot of people on their asses - for me, it's like taking an Advil and they usually don't last for the 4 or so hours they say. Doctors have a hard time understanding it.

When my grandmother was having some cancerous cells removed from her face, the doctor didn't believe her when they gave her local anesthetic and she told him she could still feel him cutting her skin. I had to go back and forth with them a few times until they understood they needed to give her more drugs than their usual patients.

Medications don't affect everyone exactly the same. That's why those disclaimers on TV list a series of possible side effects - they're possible, but maybe not for you. I'm not a doctor, but I think the safest thing is to start out with the smallest dosage possible and work your way up until you find what works best for you.

My mother and I are very simular to what Ryala described. When I had my wisdom teeth out, it took them about an hour worth of giving me shots, waiting, rinse and repeat before I was totally numb.

My mom can take two Lortab and still be functional. When I had my ear surgery in high school, I woke up in tears cause of pain. They gave me ONE tylenol 3. As soon as I took it, I told my mother it was not going to be enough. They made me wait. After about thirty minutes of feeling like someone was nailing a spike thru my head, my mom got the nurse and said that they WOULD give me more. They made me eat. Oh god that hurt. But I got the good stuff after that lol.

Same thing happened with my last ear surgery. Except the nurses were lots nicer. I woke up in recovery. They had intabetaed (sp?) me, so besides ear pain, my throat felt like sand paper. I got a nice pain shot from the nice nurse lady. Any ice chips! Then they gave me more before I went home. lol.

But, enough rambling, basically people have different tolerances. But always start with the lowest possible dose.
