How do you feel about MAFIA?

Myself and the other MAFIA mods are curious about how the players feel about the game.

We've gone at a steady one game per month pace for the last six months, and we're starting to get the impression that people are either burned out, or just straight up losing interest. Turnouts for the first two games was good, and the third game was huge with 30-something players. In this game, we had to extend the character deadline twice and send out emails and PM's to recruit new players, and we still only came up with 14 players. That's not a bad number by any means, but it is much smaller than we were expecting, and we had to work to get that many people.

Mainly we just want to know how enthusiastic people are about the games, and what we could do to make them more enjoyable and attractive to start attracting new players and bring old ones back for more.

Something else we're interested in is how long you guys want in between games. We're afraid that if we start a new game in two and a half weeks, people aren't going to be fully recovered and interested, and we'll get low turnout and participation.

I personally thought that the dwindling turnout was from problems that plague MAFIA #4 and #5, but the other mods and I want your input. Please share, and don't worry about hurting my feelings if you see a problem - I can take it.

Quite honestly, I love the game! I was planning on getting an extra friend or two over here for the next round of the game. I was pretty upset when I missed the Hitchikers run. I haven't read the books in about 10 years and I didn't get to see the movies, but I just knew it was going to be a blast. Looking back through the posts, I saw that the mods really put alot of energy into making the silly world of HGTTG a fun place to play in. I have only played the once in the Star Wars game and had bunches of fun. Maybe because I got to be the Godfather and we plinked people off one at a time, but I really think it was because it gave me more of a chance to interact with people that I wouldn't talk to much normally. I tend to get pretty shy in a new environment. That really threw me into the middle of everything!

I really hope that you don't scrap the game. If you'd like some ideas I can try to come up with some and either pM them or post them. Maybe games based on books but that can be loosely played in generic fantasy/sci-fi terms? Something that people will understand regardless of wether or not they've ready a book or seen a movie.

BTW, I had only seen the very first Star Wars movie and I was only 8 or so then. I didn't know the first damn thing about Star Wars so I just googled some home lands and some of the professions and went from there.

wouldnt it be cool, if we didnt know who each other was? It would be a pita to set up tho!

then it would be harder to habor dark feelings for people in up comming games if you didnt know who was who. More mystery that way too.

not sure if its do-able tho!

I've seen other boards do that. Have the mafia players register under different names. In fact we did that with the first game, but we knew who each other were. SO that's something we could always try again.

I have really enjoyed playing the two Mafia games that I did! I was in the Star Wars and the X-Men games, and had a blast...even though I got off'd pretty quickly in Star Wars, hehe...

I was planning on doing Hitchhiker's Guide as well, but life got complicated and I didn't have time.

I'm looking forward to any future Mafia games you guys decide to do! I think one per month is about perfect, and gives enough downtime for people to be ready for another one!

Keep up the good work, it's a ton o' fun!

The only mafia I was a part of was the first one. I'm not a good writer, so I was kind of quiet in that game. I had a blast though. It was fun to see how this type of game worked. I was fortunate enough to miss the drama...That would have been enough for me not to want to play. I've had so much stuff going on, and with me being "checked in on" during the day at work...I havent had much time to sit and read everything then reply. Some of the scenarios I had no idea what to do. HHGTTG I knew nothing about. Even after getting PM's to play, I just didnt know enough about it to even make a character for it. Same goes for the Blade Runner one. Some of the other ones I just didnt have time for. I'd like to do another one in the future though.

I read the Mafia awhile ago and was confused as hell. This last one I read and with the FAQ section it made much more sense for someone who knew nothing about it. I'm thinking about playing in the next one but to be honest I'm a chicken shit and not sure if I understand enough about the game yet to feel comfortable about playing. The two little things I can add just from reading the game as it went are I know I would be more inclinded to play with a theme I was familiar with and 2. while reading it it was alot more fun to read the sections where the characters interacted more, the last couple of hits and lynching there was almost nothing written by the characters. If anyone wants to IM me and explain some of the game before the next one starts I'll probably give it a try.

I thought the same thing, I must have asked Mae and Jin questions everyday and was really quiet the whole time just getting the feel of how it works, now that I know I think next time I will be more interactive. It isnt that hard if you have people like I did that answer your questions.

Loved it!

I didn't ask too many questions - I was a bit scared to since I was Mafia this first game. I did ask for a few pointers, and had some old timers to help coddle me through the learning curve.

I also wish there had been a bit more character interaction, and that some of the hints would come through later character interactions, not just the character descriptions...that would be lovely. Rewards people for being thorough, and keeps people on their toes when posting.

I think if people lose sight of it as a roleplaying exercise and make it into too much of a competition, that might up the speed with which they get jaded. I'll certainly be around for them when I will have regular access to the computer. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

I think the difficulty in taking the clues from things other than the bio is that people tend to play funny if they think everyone is watching everything they say, everyone's roleplay is "I'm innocent" whether they are or aren't and if they knew for sure that stuff was going to come from their roleplays many would play oddly or not at all so that you didn't have anything to incriminate them with. Its backwards thinking though..the larger the bio and the more detailed it is gives more info for the mods to be creative with which makes them able to give less obvious clues to you.

Glad you had fun =)

I've been out of touch with anythign that has happened in Mafia since my last post in this thread. I really really really wanted to play Firefly Mafia - and actually have the time now to do it this round - except- I'm going out of town fri-sun the first week its out =/ I'd have had internet access, but if you can't put alot of time in and plot and scheme it just isn't quite the same, and I felt like it would be a disservice to the others.

I did want to point out another thing that sorta burned me out before. Many people wanted far more RP'ing, and far less OOC - which is perfectly fine, except that the game was fun to me for the OOC scheming, and not for the RP/writing. Not a finger, just a case of my idea of fun differing.

I may hop in a later one - or maybe we can do another firefly later ;p

See, I can be really angry when I'm in the middle of a mafia game, but looking back over it I tend to see the fun bits. But maybe it's because I never know when the next game is happening (at GC or before that at GreNME). I sometimes try to post in character, but once someone accuses me the gloves tend to come off. At Galacticcactus we do a lot of games where the characters are already in the show. For this game I decided to just write a character that I could write that is a lot like myself and not worry about characterization.

I think with all the fresh meat...I mean new people =D this game will be a fresh of breath air...no wait, breath of fresh air. /snort I STILL say the blade runner game was the most fun. We plotted in OOC like Vulash said but we RP'd it up with each other as well. Still can't get ever how great that game was. Anyway, definitely looking forward to this one now that we have new people. Should be a hoot!

Wish you were playing V =(
