New musical crushes...

I'm trying to exercise some self control and -not- buy every album I want on impulse, so my waiting list is growing longer and longer :(. I've decided two CDs a month is acceptable and not in excess.

I just got a hold of Neutral Milk Hotel's 'On Avery Island', prelude to the excellent 'Aeroplane Over The Sea', and I enjoyed every track. I'm officially a fan I think, though they were an acquired taste for me.

Another acquired taste was the gritty but gripping tones of Leonard Cohen. He is heavily covered, possibly a result of some seriously gut-wrenching lyrics combined with melodies you can play with. I picked up an album of covers by various artists, including one of my favorites, Rufus Wainwright. Surprisingly, it was his sister Martha's cover of 'The Traitor' that really made this a truly worthwhile purchase.

In any case, there are several artists in my little holding pen. I heard an interview with Ben Kweller today - apparently he's fairly popular but I'd never heard of him :X. He played a couple songs live and...fuck I'm sold! I sincerely hope he isn't over produced on tape though - he sounds -great- with just him and his guitar. I think you can get to the songs he played here :http://www.eitmonline.com/live.html . The banner might be kind of not work safe, just to warn ya.

I also have a mad crush on Belle and Sebastian. I'm having trouble picking out which album to get, is the problem. They are darling and delightful *squishes*

Mason Jennings has a groove I'd like to tap into. Guster released a fine work quite some time ago that I still haven't gotten around to buying. Arcade Fire has caught my attention. And Bright Eyes is releasing a new album I think this month or next.

God, it's a wonder the music industry doesn't have all my money.

In any case, this really wasn't just to blab on and on about me - I'm wondering what y'all are stuck on right now - what you've bought recently and what you'd like to add to your collection.

I've liked Leonard Cohen for years...Suzanne was the song of his that brought him to my attention.

2 a month? I used to buy 2 or 3 a week >.<

The video for Ben Kweller's "Penny on the Train Track" is on MTV.com :)

My last addictions were Good Charlotte, The Killers, and Lacuma Coil. Before that it was Hinder and Nickleback. And various others...

I tend to wear myself out on artists too fast tho. I listened to Hinder so much I was tired of them before their 2nd track hit the airwaves :/

Hinder and Nickleback are good, and I specifically don't listen to the radio that much anymore, so I don't get burnt out. Radio stations play the hell out of songs these days, and since my daughter gave me her old IPod, I can have a wonderful variety of music, and include the new songs without playing them into the ground.

i discovered thievery corporation almost a year ago, and found that they fill every musical requirement of my soul for this period in my life. i bought all of their CDs and still wasnt satisfied, so ive been broadening my musical horizons and buying... well... all kinds of shit. most of it, i cant even stick into a genre. people ask me what im listening to, and when i say "kruder and dorfmeister" and they ask "whats that?", the only response i can come up with is "its sort of like an electro lounge acid dub hop", which leaves them more confused.

right now especially, im on a dub kick, buying up all kinds of anything that even remotely resembles dub.

stuff ive been buying as much of as i can get my hands on (dub and... i dunno):

thievery corporation
kruder & dorfmeister
tosca
the dining rooms
bonobo
dub trio
boozo bajou
twilight circus

other stuff i enjoy (instrumental hip hop, jazz, electronic):

quantic
sixtoo
amon tobin
boards of canada
dj krush
massive attack
zero 7
photek
skalpel

tons more stuff but i dont feel like spamming my whole mp3 folder into here. i highly recommend theivery corporation, the dining rooms, zero 7, bonobo, and skalpel if youve never heard of them. if you like jazz / acid jazz / reggae / electronic / hip hop, at least check them out. zero 7 is i dunno, trip hop i guess, bonobo and the dining rooms are like acid jazz / instrumental hip hop (TDR is from italy), and skalpel is some tight polish jazz.

i have a song from thievery corporations first album in my magelo called "assault on babylon". its from their first album (circa 1995) and, like the rest of that album, has a much more hip hop feel to it. its a lot more minimalistic than their other stuff too. its fitting for my character though :P and a free sample!

I've been rocking the newest Bright Eyes and Minus The Bear albums recently. I've also started getting into the post-rock genre, and so far I like it a lot. My favorites so far from that genre: Helios, Explosions In The Sky, Do Make Say Think, Godspeed You Black Emperor! (great names). Helios especially is very relaxing to listen to, and I often listen to it when I get to sleep.

Wait, the new bright eyes is out?!? You lucky bastard, it's good then?

It's excellent.

Where do y'all hear this new stuff? I haven't watched Mtv in years but I would imagine none of the music listed is main stream enough. Is this like college or underground stuff?
Verileah 19 years ago
You -gotta- check out pandora! I also enjoy my yahoo radio station.

Bright Eyes was recommended to me by some guy at a bar. This was the same guy that introduced me to clove cigarettes (of which I still have a few in my sock drawer because I can't throw them away :|).

I've had clove cigs before. They're minty!

Most of my music is random recommendations from various message boards. I also check the top10 on oink (an outstanding music torrent site) and download that stuff if it looks interesting.
ROzbeans 19 years ago
I downloaded some of them - I think they're a little too emo'ish for me, but they were good.

One of my current favorites is Kate Havnevik. I read an small article about her in a magazine and decided to check her out. I really enjoy her CD Melankton. I was also recently introduced to Blue October and Gomez, and am liking them a lot as well.

Where do y'all hear this new stuff?

for a few years i listened to nothing but mid 90s hip hop, trip hop (mostly portishead and sneaker pimps), and whatever garbage they threw at me over the radio. i discovered jungle and found that it caused my brain to release endorphines or something when i listened to it, but it got too fast and chaotic as a whole, so i stuck with listening to the older stuff that had turned me on.

fast forward a few more years

i started my job at the city and had money to burn, a city vehicle with a CD player, and an ipod (my personal vehicle does not have a CD player). i hit amazon.com looking for more portishead, sneaker pimps, and massive attack. amazon has this great recommendation system that shows you things like "customers who purchased this also purchased this" and "customers who viewed this item bought this item", as well as forum-style posts and user reviews for all items. i started checking out recommended artists/albums and found that i liked some, bought them, looked at recommendations from those albums, and eventually discovered thievery corporation. it all went downhill from there. dozens of CDs later, i find myself on art message boards pushing my musical favorites like a dope salesman, or some door to door evangelist.

LISTEN TO THIEVERY CORPORATION OR BURN IN HELL, SINNER!

thievery corporation turned me on to dub, and thats like the roots of everything i love about music. im starting now to pick up more jungle, albeit the downtempo stuff (early smith & mighty and AFX).

in summary: to find new music, go to amazon.com and search an album you like, then check out the peoples recommendations (and the recommendations on those albums, and so on and so on)

I've put Thievery corporation on my radio, still haven't decided if I want to buy a record. This month's picks just arrived today - I'm currently listening to The Fratellis and I also have Belle and Sebastian :D. The Fratellis is just darling, peppy energetic spaz punk with a splash of ska. Check them out on myspace if you haven't heard of them. Also youtube I think has some vids.

I just discovered Shiny Toy Guns today.... and I think I like them :) http://www.myspace.com/shinytoyguns

Recently also been listening to She Wants Revenge - http://www.myspace.com/shewantsrevenge , and One Republic - http://www.myspace.com/onerepublic . Funny enough, found both of them off Timbaland's new album.

Also, Breaking Benjamin - www.myspace.com/breakingbenjamin , is pretty good.
Verileah 18 years ago
I am torn on shiny toy guns...some songs I really like and then others get on my nerves. I dig she wants revenge, but can't listen to them at work or without headphones so I honestly probably wouldn't buy the album. I'm not a total puritan or anything but there's just a little too much profanity for it to be worth the money. Will have to check out your other two...I know I've heard of breaking benjamin but I can't seem to place a song by them, and I'm pretty sure I'm not familiar with one republic.

My new crush - cocorosie. This sisterly duo is a little...different...but charming nonetheless. I think they're at www.myspace.com/cocorosie but I can't check to be 100 percent sure :X. I think this might be one of my two albums for the month of May but not totally sure. Bright Eyes is definitely taking up one slot, that album is fucking awesome.
