I'm partial to the reds so I really dig the top motorcycle one. I sat down with my wacom last night and honestly I can't figure out the sensitivity to be able to actually sketch something out. Did you do this on paper and scan or is this straight from illustrator/photoshop?

Speaking of Wacoms...my problem is I can't draw on the tablet, and watch the monitor. Stupid, I know, since I can draw with the mouse just fine. But put the pen in my hand and I keep needing to look at the tablet, and a lot of freaking good that does :P

I have to agree with Roz, the jetbikes are my favorite. They are all excellent Wystro. The way you capture light in your images is amazing.

The cyborg picture I scanned as a pencil drawing and then altered in PS. The rest I drew with PS and the WACOM pad only. What I do first is take a big brush and block out sihouettes with a mid-range color/value (This is most apparent with the horse-eating shmoo picture). Then I use a smaller brush with the same color set to multiply and alternate that with the use of the eraser to carve out and define the image. If I have a second or third major color, I will introduce them in the appropriate spaces.

After that, I use color dodge (yippeee!) to create the lighting effects. For the motorcycle one, I used a light red color dodge for the inside light and a light blue color dodge for the outside.

For some of the flashes of light, I used a huge brush on 100% color dodge but just barely tapped the areas like on the helmet -- that makes a burst of light that sort of eats up the surrounding a bit. I also used the giant brush at a lesser setting to skim around the hangar bay door to help convey that high-altitude overly-bright feel.

DSG 1246: Sci-Fantasy: LENGTH OF LARGE SCOOP-MOUTHED DEMON-MECH IS FIT W/ TANK TREADS

I so wanted to hate this topic, but I really had a lot of fun!
((edit: Oh god! It looks like a lumpy dildo with treads! Whatever...it's up now. Let the guys over there be mysteriously drawn to it!))

:teehee It's strangely erotic!!! I guess they do obsess with sci fi stuff over there - but it really is a popular theme. When we did our sci fi theme our participation jumped, at the time, to a new high. People dig the sexy cyborgs! I personally really loved the story I came up with (me...vain? never!) so I can see how it dominates the daily challenges over there.

Your explanation was pretty close to what I thought you did - i tried blocking out colors first and then going in to erase and define - you know what confuses me the most? Color dodge. We're talking photoshop or illustrator because in PS i can't figure out how to set dodge to a color - it just brightens for me. I r not smert!

Man I love the way you use colors! <3

My favorite is the animal-saving cyborg. So sweet and yay and cute and shiney!

Roz - to set a color to color dodge, take the paint brush tool then go up top to where it says mode and in the drop down box select color dodge. I know... it took me awhile too. I kept thinking, "how the hell do I dodge a specific color?!"

Anywho, I really dig the first painting with the jetbikes. There is a really nice contrast between the deep reddish tones and then the bright blue. Exactly what I would expect to see when waiting to be ejected from a cargo plane!

BTW Wystro, your description of your latest totally made me lol. :P

I like it! It came out very conceptual and the shading on the little scientist standing next to it really draws my eye to him. I get the biggest kick finding the order in your chaotic drawings - no other way to put it.

These are all really great Wystro. I think I have a new favorite though. I love the expression (and the hair) on Mega-Foot.
