Run this up yer mizzenmast and see if it shivers yer timbers..

SOLOMON CAINE FtW!

Check it out...

STORY THEME

From the Mafia Hit:

The stories told that even pirates were reluctant to come this way. '

The rumor was that you could find the need to draw your blade at any moment and die for any reason.

Having heard many stories, the Captain suspected the meaning of this message.

There it was, just as the stories had always described.

Seems as though Caine doth protest too much...

Indeed Solomon Caine is most eloquent, although could you please explain how this related to Captain Caine's Background aside from his story having just begun?

FORLORN HOPE More than a ship's name?

Most definitely. If any of you are familiar with what the Forlorn Hope means, you're most likely fans of Bernard Cornell and his great soldier Richard Sharpe. To charge the Forlorn Hope, was to be in the front line of combat and attempt to force your way through a breached battlement or wall. There was a chance "the Hope" that you would make it through alive and secure the area, but it was a "Forlorn" one because the first attackers to breach the battlements tended to be bloodied repulsed or wiped out. To survive one (like Sharpe does) was considered heroic and could earn one promotions.

Slipnish;94402

MAFIA HIT:

Watching one's back in a place like this was important if you wanted to survive.

Caine was the only officer to survive his encounter, and thus achieve promotion to Pirate Hunter... Along with a raise, a secretary, and a big, fast, multi-cannoned ship...

A Privateer was not initially charged with hunting pirates, but given the tacit (though not usually acknowledged) approval of their patron Monarch to hunt the merchant vessels of enemy nations and relieve them of their cargo. Many European Powers did this, most notably Spain, France, England, Portugal and the Dutch. Some Privateers did become Pirates in the course of time. Caine was fortunate enough that the Governor of Bengal considered the French Privateers to be a nuisance to be gotten rid of.

One Frigate against another would be an even fight. Three against one would be a longshot at best. Considering the Captain and Officers were expected to remain calm in the face of danger and walk openly amongst the crew (at least the British ones were), then the chance of being injured or killed was a very real risk. In odds of a battle like the one faced by the Somerville then it is indeed a "Forlorn Hope" that they would break the Blockade of Bengal and save the day.

Captain and crew made it to open sea just as the red rays of the sun touched the horizon. By the dawn’s early light, the Captain could see that it was already too late.

Too late by half. Hope there was gone. One might say, forlorn, eh?

and from the hit we have...

Even a craft as grand as this would have trouble when out-numbered.

Looks like a mirror's reflection of the bio to me...

Thoughts?

An East Indiaman wouldn't consider a Frigate a threat - three Frigates certainly. In fact Frigates from the Indian Ocean acted as patrol, scout and escort vessels for merchant ships like the East Indiaman.

Forlorn Hope - or no hope at all - would be on Captain Williams mind as he faced down the only two ships capable of mopping the ocean floor with the Aurora - a First Rate Ship of the Line and the Flagship of the Andorran Navy.

BTW: Rosa is STILL my pick for the SK. Can't wait to see that tonight.

Personally, I think Mystique is the SK, but if there's no hit tonight then it was FyreGarret or Vudu

There are so many people whose bio's fit pretty well... I'm looking at it color-wise, attitude-wise, and past-history-wise, and I'm seeing a CROWD of people who fit this one. *sigh*

Just because there seems to be some confusion, I just want to clarify and say that under normal game circumstances, a round consists of 2 RL days - day 1 includes the mafia hit and /ooc discussion, and day 2 includes the serial kill in the morning, more discussion, and the lynch at night. If the serial killer is dead, the vote is held on day 1 and from that point forward, the game operates on a 1 round = 1 RL day. So I would assume that no vote thread means the serial killer is still alive, unless something very unusual happened.

And...I just realized Four Winds is in a completely different time zone. Nevermind, I'm an idiot.

Tipple is a funny word :D.

Edit: I'm sorry - I shouldn't be so flippant when you're clearly putting so much effort into grandstanding. It -is- sort of funny, though, and I really think people will see it for what it is. I'm not grasping at straws at all - you're the one trying to twist my bio around to fit your theory, when anyone can see that she wasn't a particularly good scout/pirate.

I would just laugh it off altogether if not for the fact that I'm a little disturbed at the absolutes you're trying to assert. It might just be a stylistic thing, but you tend to state things as fact when they really aren't. Nothing is certain. Everyone is suspect. And yes, that means when the American National Anthem turns up in a hit, everybody look at the American. It doesn't mean trying to cram my bio into your pet theory when it really doesn't make sense, any more than anyone else in the game. There have even been a couple of alternative explanations offered to the Dawns early light, and beyond that you've got nothing. You're clutching a slender straw indeed, friend.

Okay no grandstanding, just what I observe as being more striking than other biographies at the moment after the Mafia Hit:

Captain Nova Pestewa:

Comes from a family of Smugglers:

How did Nova Piestewa of the desert become Lady Nova of the High Seas? Well it started with a bottle of rum. Yo ho ho, and all that. Nova got pulled into the smuggling ring when she was just a young girl, due to the influence of her rather nasty older brothers. Of course she started off on dry ground, as a lookout girl. One night she sat holding a bottle of smuggled rum and began thinking about all the places said bottle had been. Deciding that the idea of alcohol seeing more of the world than the person drinking it was total bullshit, she left her post in the dead of night, taking the bottle with her, and started off on a life of adventure.

We have no idea how long Captain Pestewa had been involved in the smuggling ring with her brothers, but she was posted as a lookout - and that's a position that is vitally important when you need to keep a watch out for the authorities or to stay alert for signals and messages from and to other smugglers.

Is a noted Thief:

Of course, it wasn’t that easy. Nova has a lot of personality, but it takes more than that to become a great pirate. Fortunately, she discovered that many other abilities came naturally to her, such as leadership, and the ever-important ability to hold one’s drink – a key point in earning the respect of her crew. The rest, she learned in time – some lessons the easy way, but most the hard, because in spite of being a pretty bright young woman, she could be pretty thick skulled. She stole from others, and had others steal from her. Most of the time she seemed to break even, but those who were acquainted with her claimed that she always seemed to be having a good time.

The Powaqa (Hoppi for "Witch") is a Sloop. Fitting for a Smuggler/Pirate Captain.

Hardly the Vessel for Combat. To me it makes sense that Captain Pestewa would be the Mafia representative on the shore who could signal the others.

The name Nova interesting, and could be implied in the Mafia hit, though nothing definitive.

  1. A star that suddenly becomes much brighter and then gradually returns to its original brightness over a period of weeks to years.

  2. A nova (pl. novae) is a cataclysmic nuclear explosion caused by the accretion of hydrogen onto the surface of a white dwarf star
Rae;94375

Captain and crew made it to open sea just as the red rays of the sun touched the horizon. By the dawn’s early light, the Captain could see that it was already too late.

Rae;94375
Soon black smoke and gun powder filled the air. The force of the blast hitting the deck caused those too near to lose footing.

The correlation between Captain Nova Pestewa's American nationality and hints in the Mafia hit have already been commented upon.

Everyone is suspect, agreed.

But I still believe Captain Pestewa is slightly more suspect than others.

OK guys I can’t shake it, there’s another wind reference. Yes, its sort of weak ‘the winds were kind as the flag with the crossed sabers drifted down to cover the Captain’. I’m probably getting paranoid about little details like that as I go along. After all we are talking about sailing ships (and one row boat) wind is going to play a part in everything…

I really liked the reference to the bloody sunrise but Captain Williams is already confined to the locker so there goes that idea.

I must admit the references to the American National anthem are rather stunning. I think I need to see the SK hit tomorrow before I go pointing any fingers.

LOL - you crack me up. I don't know why, but you seem to want me to be the SK so you're pathetically tying to make clues fit me.

Whatever.

I haven't had time this weekend to really do much, but hope to make up for it tomorrow when I get to work and have free time to play :P

Oh, and just so those who know me will know...I'm a townie. :P

Actually, I couldn't find any real clues from the Mafia hit today that you're one of them except that you're skilled enough to plant a mark on a person discretely and quietly. I ended up ruling you out anyway.

And seeing as how we haven't had a SK hit yet, I haven't been able to speculate either way.

I'm a townie...you're a townie...we're all townies...

Did some research while browsing through the University archives today. Hope someone else is more familiar with this than I am:

Dead Men Tell No Tales - "The dead cannot reveal any secrets."

The proverb has been traced back to Thomas Becon (c. 1560). First attested in the United States in 'Porcupine's Works' (1797)..." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996).

Hehehe...

So much suspician, so much paranoia, soon the oceans and seas shall flow red with the tides and fill with the flotsome of another kill.

Then I have to ask, who's opinions and suspicisions shall we see shifting like the wind upon furrelled sails and where shall the compass point.

I already posted a bit on page 1 about "Dead Men Tell No Tales." It is a story by E W Hornung, near as I can find.

I am not going to re-post what I already posted, so if you care to read my thoughts on the matter please read back to the start of this thread. :)

There are many intriguing parallels between this story and some of our bios.

There may be parallels between that story and our bios, but I sure as hell hope the clues are in this game and not in that story. I know I don't have time to read anything but whats here :(

Thanks BlackRabbit, I did come across the story by E.W Hornung as well, but was interested in the older source attributed to Thomas Beacon.

Same here, I'm juggling three University papers and a Poetry course at this time. :D

I believe something to this effect was mentioned in round 1 ooc, but I think it's a good idea to look at those who made sure to mention their artillery in their bios. I know it's pretty obvious that ALL of our ships (with the exception of the row boat) have cannons and shit, but both of the mafia hits involved the victim being blown to bits by cannon fire (if I read correctly).

Likewise, I haven't had too much time to read with work and all the reading I've had to do for school over the weekend. I'm hoping to make up for it tomorrow.

I'm confused by Captian Ginger Ears and Dominic too. Is it the same person or two people? If the same person then that makes them both either townies or both mafia.

/tips hat at the mods for the "I feel so broke up" lyric from Sloop John B in the SK hit :D

How wonderfully apt on so many levels!

edit: actually I mis-read the SK hit - I thought the Sloop referred to the victim, but they actually had a schoener. Is this a clue to the killer then, maybe?
MashPotato 18 years ago
Hmm, looks like this SK hit rules out a few people... for example, those who can't punch due to lack of arms or are too short to punch Angela in the face due to lack of legs. Which are pretty much the same people, actually ;)
CaptainBinky 18 years ago
I also get the impression that the SK is a man rather than a woman. I don't know why - it's maybe just the slightly condescending tone of the dialogue, but it sounds more 'blokey' to me.
MashPotato 18 years ago
I get a bit of that impression too, but more from the transition of Angela musing about how she can easily trick men to the ironic twist of her being bested by a man. Of course, that might not have been intended :)
CaptainBinky 18 years ago
Also, the look of shock she registers when confronted with the SK... does this point to somebody who is, maybe, disfigured?
Laha 18 years ago
The SK's definately a man, which rules out a lot here, and as he took her in the port and not at sea, that also weeds out the pirate hunters, who again, wouldn't be in a pirate port.

Hehehe...and so the plot thickens!

(^_^)

Just putting all those things together...

Ship, Sloop (from the Beach Boys song in the SK kill)
Gender, Male (due to irony as Mash points out, required physical attributes, and masculine dialogue)
Disfigured (due to the shock the victim registers)

Captain Jack Blackwater, sails a sloop, massive man, a long white scar starting over ihs right eye and running across his crooked nose, savage appearence.

Of course, that ties up so nicely it's almost bound to be wrong :D
Den 18 years ago
As to those men who are disfigured, besides Captain Jack Blackwater we have:

Captain John "Squirrel Lips" Jessop = 'one nose, half an eye, six toes..." "his ribcage ...replaced with an old oak rum barrel, his left arm was his own flesh and bone that had been grafted onto the barrel...the right was replaced entirely with a wooden socket..."

Captain Ginger Ears = "lost all four of his limbs...both of his eyes" (though this guy also lost his tongue, which would make verbal communication a tad impossible)

Gentleman Jack Morgan = "leaving the gentleman with one eye, no nose, and four lips"

All the other males appear to be rather normal in appearance.
