Yep, that's true. I was focusing on Blackwater because of the sloop ship as well. But I reckon that's probably a reach too far, in all honesty.

At this early stage of the game, everything is pretty much a stretch...there just hasn't been enough written to gather a lot of clues. So, unfortunately for some, all we can do is guess at a lot, and hope our guesses are correct :S

Here's an interesting proposition.
Captain Cesare (Cuirasse) Bontempe
The first SK hit was light on clues, which is expected. However, the phrase "The Captain of the once proud Catfish rolled his head towards the sound of the voice so that he might at least face his killer" popped out at me when I went over it in more detail.
Captain Bontempe's bio states: After 10 years as a deck mate and by being a natural mediator when he believed in the cause he ended up as the quarter master under Captain Sandrigan.
-A mediator is a judge and the SK hit alludes to having the right to face your accuser.
In addition, Bontempe's bio mentions his having obtained several letters of marque. These are basically early forms of search warrants, commissioned by a government. More with the law stuff. See wikipedia's entry for more info on letters of marque.
***
From today's SK hit:
"I feel so broke up, I wanna go home." We've already determined that this is Sloop John B.
Captain Bontempe's bio also states: Cesare began his sea days on a small sloop in the Caribbean after being pressganged by the Spanish.
Hrm. Who else is from the Caribbean who might recognize Bontempe? Why, Angela. Imagine her shock at seeing someone she has met before.
***
Furthermore, the SK says, “I'm sorry, “Darling†but this race could use one less competitor.â€Â
This from someone whose bio clearly states he has a reputation for fairness: "His reputation for being as fair as possible for bounty dispersal ..." Granted this isn't bounty dispersal but it's still a relation. Sounds like someone's trying to even up the odds.
***
And, lastly, the SK is clearly familiar with Angela, at least to the extent of being comfortable saying: “Don't worry though, you're being shipped home to daddy.â€Â
While it's feasible that any of us could have done the necessary research to gain the intelligence of Angela as a rich daddy's girl, the SK seems pretty comfortable in that assessment, and if you couple it with the idea that perhaps they've met before, it does make sense.
So there's my bid for tonight. While I think that's a lot of evidence, I haven't found anyone else whose bio fits the bill quite the same way.

I'm not much help without my spreadsheet, will be more useful at home. In spite of captaining a sloop myself, I'm a go out on a limb and say that it's worth looking into. One thing on my list of things to do is to take some time to look at the quiet people, just to try to see that no one is laying low and getting away with it.

I dunno Billie...until a bit more is played it can be difficult to get very involved, especially if you haven't played much. I know even after playing a few games I still feel a lot more comfortable once the suspects have been dwindled down to a more manageable group.
And thanks Bunny...those are all great ideas...and much more than I had been able to combine.
The possibility that the pirates knew each other though, is just that...an assumption we really don't have anything to support as yet. However, still better than anything else I've seen.

I'm definitely not ready to rule out the SK being a woman.
I think the last little bit of the SK hit may allude to Squirrel Lips' character:
I think the last little bit of the SK hit may allude to Squirrel Lips' character:
He drifted in the open ocean for six years, surviving purely by drinking sea water (which due to his wooden kidneys was perfectly safe to do) and feasting on any curious fish that got trapped in his barrel chest looking for whatever it is fishes like to eat.
The figure standing on the docks thumped the barrel a second time for good measure.
“I'm sorry, “Darling” but this race could use one less competitor.”
Rolling the barrel towards the edge of the pier, the stranger gave it a final thump before shoving it over the edge.
“Don't worry though, you're being shipped home to daddy.”
Turning away from the final resting place of Angela Tasman, the figure glanced up at the now captain-less schoener with its emerald flag fluttering silently in the night air.
“Too bad, I forgot to make sure you'd float.”
Unlike the other barrels bobbing towards a merchant ship bound for Europe, Angela's conveyance slowly began to sink...most likely from the rocks that had been placed around her feet.

The barrel references, plus the previous SK title of "food for the fishes" does seem related to Squirrel Lips, but the way in which Angela is killed doesn't seem to fit... how would he manage to punch her square in the face when he doesn't have any legs? ;)
I'm not totally convinced about the SK being male either :) While the language seems to point that way for me, it's not so strong that females can be completely ruled out, I don't think.
PS: interesting stuff, BR :)

I don't see a hugely strong case for Squirrel Lips honestly. I'm trying to focus more on the entire situation instead of one or two random words that could be associated with anyone's bio. I mean, doesn't the word "float" apply to everyone here with a ship... which is pretty much all of us?
I find it far more likely that the familiarity with which the SK speaks implies they may have met before.
While it IS possible that Rosa could fit that mold, Haiti (and Tortuga) are much farther away from Curacao (Angela's home island) than St Lucia (Bontempe's). Haiti is in the northern Caribbean and Tortuga is a teeny island just north of -that-. St Lucia is kinda on the northern end of the Windward Antilles while Curacao is in the south, just north of Venezuela. If both these pirates have been plundering the Caribbean for years, it is quite likely that they've been in competition with each other and therefore, one might want to eliminate the other from this particular race.
In addition, unless Rosa's a leftie (which probably isn't he case or else why wouldn't her left hand have been the one replaced with the hook?), then her punch probably wasn't the strongest. That and she hates going into port.
So based on the relative locations of those three pirates (yes, I'm still looking at geographical location), it makes sense that Bontempe might be in a position to sock Angela in the face and ship her home to daddy (A European ship, I might add... Angela is from Curaco. So the SK must know about her Dutch heritage, as well).

Hmmm... not sure about Squirrel Lips, in the SK kill doesn't it rather imply that the victim is still sat down when she gets punched?
Having said that, Squirrel's bio doesn't really specify what's happened to his legs. It mentions that he escaped with one knee but doesn't explain whether both legs are amputated, or whether he still has at least one functioning (although stiff without a knee) leg.
Also, I have to say I'm more leaning towards the stuff Blackrabbit posted earlier. Like she says all the rest of this is just kind of picking up on one point and running with it.
SK Kill
No getting up in-between so maybe this does point to a short person? She plopped down upon a stool ... Turning back towards the entrance, the Captain found herself facing another figure but had very little time to register more than shock. The person grinned and then punched her square in the face.

I think we can rule out familiarity based on what we know about the SK, specifically that they are a plant and not a pirate.
CaptainBinky

While that's true, the fact that the SK is a plant doesn't invalidate the bio does it? Surely things like where the character's from are still relevant regardless of the character's role?

Interesting write up Dread Pirate Rabbit. :bonk BTW, I need to reread if you are female or male...
If I didn't know far better, I'd believe it myself LOL.
If you decide it's me and you kill me off, you will still have a SK hit to contend with. I think it is noticable that she never left her stool. Perhaps it was a high bar stool and perhaps it wasn't...I think too we have some women quite capable of punching someone in the face. Perhaps her shock was that the person was alive at all and actually in that bar? Who knows, maybe it was someone from her own past. I personally think the sloop has nothing to do with it and no, not because I mentioned it. I just see the humor of the mods attaching known and frequently said 'lines' and 'ditties' that are appropriate. What good is a pirate without a good 'ditty' anyway? They are all supposed to drink, get drunk and sing. And not sing gospel songs either! Too bad they haven't written in "What do you do with a drunken sailor?" yet, but I think the SK just killed off the captain's daughter for the next line to that song! Although there are a few more lines to the song available for use. Keel hauling was always a pirate picnic affair....Why not name one "Row Row Row your boat?" or the lyrics from the song 1814, "We fired our guns and the British kept a'coming"? I could go on but I will spare my cube mates LOL at work the snort laughs.

That SK Hit was a doozy. And the Sloop John. B reference stood out straight away, not just because it's a song but it's a complete departure from "Big Bad Wolf" and "Dead Men Tell No Tales."
Captain Angela Maria Tasman was decked with one shot. That's something. By lack of physical prowess that would eliminate Captain Ginger Ears and Dominic the Parrot.
Physical Build:
Captain Solomon Caine:
"his imposing frame and silent bearing make even the bravest tribesman uneasy in his presence."
Captain Darsa:
"She keeps herself as fit as she could, as she knows her physical strength and agility will help keep her alive and a contender among so many men."
Captain Devilish Mary:
"Keeping her true identity (and gender) a secret she worked her way up the ranks, learning to sail, navigate, read, fight just as any boy would eventually becoming first mate on a ship all the time seeking her Billy or word of his fate."
Captain Jack Mogan:
"The Gentleman is a well-built and strong man, yet not exceptionally so. He is a competent swordsman, but his true strength in battle comes from his savagery and raw animal cunning."
Captain Jack Blackwater:
"In truth he is a massive man, well over 6 ft and seemingly as broad shouldered and brawney as he is tall."
Captain John 'Squirrel Lips' Jessop
"John grew up in the service of Le Surgeon, who used his adopted son’s unique physical attributes to brew wine which he then sold on for profit."
"his left arm was his own flesh and bone that had been grafted onto the barrel using some kind of gluey stuff, while the right was replaced entirely with a wooden socket allowing for all manner of useful attachments; such as a cutlass, musket, a cast iron pillaging rod and a harlot tickler."
Whoever decked Captain Angela Maria Tasman could do so with impunity in a Pirate Bar.
Granted, not many Pirates have a sense of honor, but to knock out a woman and take her away without even so much as a show of protest or interest from the bar patrons could suggest that the character who did it is either known by reputation or is intimidating enough that others will pretty much let him/her do what they want.
Intimidating Appearance:
Captain Solomon Caine:
"the grim faced, steely eyed Captain of the Forlorn Hope"
"his imposing frame and silent bearing make even the bravest tribesman uneasy in his presence."
Captain Darsa:
"A single visible scar lines her face from her left earlobe to her chin; the surgeon who stitched it did an amazing job and she is proud of the thin line proclaiming that she is a fighter, and is more than willing to tell the tale of what she did to the sailor who gave her that mark."
Captain Jack Morgan:
"The Gentleman is something of a contradiction. To his victims and enemies, he is one of the most brutal and ruthless men on the Spanish Main. To his crew and friends, he is fair and honest by any standards, and is especially so for a pirate."
"The Gentleman was never a handsome man, and he was made even less so on the night that he took an axe to the face while scaling a fortress wall during a raid. The wound was horrific, leaving the gentleman with one eye, no nose, and four lips. Even though a full beard would do much to hide this wound, the Gentleman is one of very few clean-shaven pirates. Despite his terrifying visage, the Gentleman's dress is more suited to a European noble than a pirate baron and he speaks English, Dutch, and Spanish elegantly and articulately."
Captain Jack Blackwater:
"Jet black hair, wild and unkempt, adding to his savage appearance, shining black eyes peering from his bearded and olive skinned face, a long white scar starting over ihs right eye and running across his crooked nose to his left cheek a reminder of one of the many close calls he has faced."
Someone who can knock out a woman, do so without any interference and spirit her away in front of a bar loaded with fellow pirates. The fact this takes place in a drinking establishment gives us two characters who are noted drinkers:
Captain John 'Squirrel Lips' Jessop
"Bloodied and deformed, the child staggered around the streets of Paris until he happened upon an drug addict surgeon named Monsieur Le Surgeon (though probably with some accented letters) who envisioned the entire medical field of cybernetics centuries ahead of its time during one of his opium induced stupors."
"His ribcage had been replaced with an old oak rum barrel, his left arm was his own flesh and bone that had been grafted onto the barrel using some kind of gluey stuff, while the right was replaced entirely with a wooden socket allowing for all manner of useful attachments; such as a cutlass, musket, a cast iron pillaging rod and a harlot tickler."
As the assault takes place in a rather seedy establishment (then again, aren't all pirate bars that way?), it could indicate familiarity with the environment or another red herring:
Noted Drinkers:
Captain Cesare (Cuirasse) Bontempe
"Even though he realized it was partially his fault for being blind running drunk in the wrong bar at the wrong time"
Captain Nova Piestewa:
"Fortunately, she discovered that many other abilities came naturally to her, such as leadership, and the ever-important ability to hold one’s drink – a key point in earning the respect of her crew."
"The drink may calm her, that and the sight of gold, but best ye stay out of her way should ye find her dry and empty handed."
Language/Speech:
Captain Angela Maria Tasman spoke English/Dutch and the typical Caribbean tongue.
That's not particularly helpful. I'm assuming for the purposes of gameplay the characters would all understand English, at least well enough to converse in it. I haven't checked the biographies to see if any other Captain can speak Dutch and/or Caribbean.
"Darling" and "daddy" aren't exactly terms used by the well spoken.
While you can't rule out the SK being male or female, the way the Serial Killer speaks to Captain Tasman isn't exactly the Queen's English, or in fact the sort of language used by those from an aristocratic or Naval Officer background. This would exclude Captain Solomon Caine (a former Officer and Captain in the British Navy), and Colonel James O'Connor (who is very well spoken - check his biography)
Darling?
The use of "Darling" is of course ironic given Captain Angela Maria Tasman's earlier statement but there is another clue to be found here.
It didn't jump out at me at first until I remembered a rather famous poem by Rudyard Kipling:
"Darling" features prominently in this poem, which is in fact about Smugglers and has it's basis on the illegal smuggling that took place at St. George's Island near Cornwall.
That could indicate that the Captain is/was or came from a Smuggling Background, or is English and/or from Cornwall.
The only Captain that specifically comes from Cornwall is Captain John 'Squirrel Lips' Jessop
Captain Bloody Rich is English and comes from a small fishing village.
Captain Caitri Ambrai-Greystone is Irish and comes from a small fishing village.
That's probably not much there - but some fishing villages were known to be haven's for Cross Channel smuggling. Of course this is pure speculation as nothing is stated.
The only pirate Captain we know for sure came from a smuggling background is Captain Nova Piestewa
The method used to dispose of Captain Angela Maria Tasman is unique, and speaks of one who has worked around Ports before - people from fishing villages and smugglers might know the merchant barrel technique works and how to abuse it. That would certainly fit in with the characters above.
The Flag: Emerald Green with skull holding emerald gems in both eye sockets
Captain Caitri Ambrai-Greystone is the only Pirate Captain who stands out with emerald green eyes in both eye sockets most likely!
That's all I could think of today...

It didn't jump out at me at first until I remembered a rather famous poem by Rudyard Kipling:
A Smuggler's Song
If you wake at midnight, and hear a horse's feet,
Don't go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street.
Them that ask no questions isn't told a lie.
Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!
Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark -
Brandy for the Parson,
'Baccy for the Clerk;
Laces for a lady, letters for a spy,
And watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!
Running round the woodlump if you chance to find
Little barrels, roped and tarred, all full of brandy-wine,
Don't you shout to come and look, nor use 'em for your play.
Put the brishwood back again - and they'll be gone next day!
If you see the stable-door setting open wide;
If you see a tired horse lying down inside;
If your mother mends a coat cut about and tore;
If the lining's wet and warm - don't you ask no more!
If you meet King George's men, dressed in blue and red,
You be careful what you say, and mindful what is said.
If they call you "pretty maid," and chuck you 'neath the chin,
Don't you tell where no one is, nor yet where no one's been!
Knocks and footsteps round the house - whistles after dark -
You've no call for running out till the house-dogs bark.
Trusty's here, and Pincher's here, and see how dumb they lie -
They don't fret to follow when the Gentlemen go by!
If you do as you've been told, 'likely there's a chance,
You'll be given a dainty doll, all the way from France,
With a cap of Valenciennes, and a velvet hood -
A present from the Gentlemen, along o' being good!
Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark -
Brandy for the Parson,
'Baccy for the Clerk;
Them that asks no questions isn't told a lie -

I wouldn't rule out a female SK just yet.
This shows me that although she might have a way with men, she has nothing when it comes to dealing with a woman. Smiling a true smile indicates that she was grateful the men stepped in.
My initial thought was someone who is disfigured, which immediately led to my first accusation against Squirrel Lips. On the other hand, could she have been startled by /gasp a woman?
The barrel references also made me think of Squirrel Lips, but that might be too obvious... or maybe that's what the mods want us to think... hehe
BR made some good points, but I think we are all pretty familiar with each other. Especially since we're all in the same race for treasue and most of us have our reputations. I think some news or rumors about someone being a daddy's girl, or whatever, would be floatin' around.
The last SK hit made me take a closer look at Darsa's profile, and the same held true for this SK hit.
Sinking a whole ship not far from shore, without getting caught, makes sinking one person in a barrel seem like childs play.
Not to mention use of a dinghy also plays into my theory from the first SK hit that someone came up on a smaller boat and snuck aboard the ship. Although we know now that the black dot business is mafia, so she didn't do that, but she could have slowly dispatched the sailors with her stiletto.
Could also fit the eyes to emeralds reference Four Winds made.
Could her reputation be the reason why no one stepped in to help Angela this time?
And, of course the points made by Four Winds about her physical fitness and the scar on her face.
The woman grinned mirthlessly as the wench screeched and lunged for her eyes. Several men pulled the fair haired woman away kicking and screaming towards the door. The Captain then smiled a true smile and turned back towards the bar.
Turning back towards the entrance, the Captain found herself facing another figure but had very little time to register more than shock. The person grinned and then punched her square in the face.
She planned her next steps carefully; she managed to sink the Atlantis while only a mile or so from shore, and just after leaving her particular port. She was the only survivor, strangely enough; there was only one dinghy aboard that was seaworthy, thanks to her diligent efforts, and she knew which one that was. The ship's cook managed to clamber in with her, who she dispatched with her 18th birthday present, a silver-hilted stiletto, and shoved overboard.

Her eyes are keen and the deep greenblue of the water as they leave the shallows, lined at the corners with squinting into the wind and sun.
Many years later Darsa is sailing among the pirates as a respected and somewhat feared Captain; her casual disregard for those not of her crew is legendary.
And, of course the points made by Four Winds about her physical fitness and the scar on her face.

There is a historical reference in smuggling goods through simple displacement, in such an example, one would locate a cargo or selevtive goods, usually while on the targeted vessel or loading dock, which usually spoke of stealth or good relations, meaning bribes or paid off friends.
A common practice was to take a water barrel or pickling barrel, then drain it, load it with dead weight, place the goods inside, seal it with hot wax, and sink it in shallow waters, quite litterally off the side of a dock or ship in high tide, then the goods were easily enough recovered once the tide had let out.
Simple enough yes?

I decided to look into the sloop reference a bit more...
Sloop Captains:
- Santiago Ortiz (M)
- Trepidation Morose (F acting as M)
- William Cleene (M)
- Nova Piestewa (F)
- Jack Blackwater (M)
Three of these Captains stand out to me...
Trepidation Morose:
- Appears to be male, but is really female. Perhaps her true identity revealed could have been a shocker.
- "Tre Morose and has garnered a reputation for being only after one dream, turning the Seas bloody and black in her wake." Reference to first SK hit (think this was pointed out before).
Jack Blackwater:
- Intimidating presence, some disfigurement.
- "Merchant ships are often times boarded and taken over before the ominous flag is ever seen, its crew sent to the depths below, ship and cargo plundered and sold."
William Cleene:
- Willian doesn't appear very pirate-y. Maybe his presence in a pirate port was shocking?
- "The ship Innocence took far more cargo with the confusion her pirate colors caused in rival crews." I'd say he has access to cargo barrels.
- "Fights were best avoided - they were messy affairs, and got the cannons so dirty. Still, a crew must be paid, and cleaning the seas of filth seemed to be as good a calling as any." This seems like a clean and efficient way to off someone.
- The true fate of both of the SK's victims were pretty much 'washed away' by the sea.
As for Nova and Santiago - I really don't see Nova as the SK, especially since she is looking kind of like a mafia suspect at the moment. And, I may be bias :P but I don't see any relation between my bio and the SK kill.
I honestly don't know who I'm going to vote for tonight, but I got to come up with something within the next few minutes since I leave for work and won't get home until after the polls are closed.

I'm having a hard time ignoring the literal side of my brain that is screaming 'dude, squirrel lips is half man, half barrel and the victim was killed in a...wait for it...barrel.' However, I find myself liking the Trepidation Morose theory, and not just for reasons listed. Tre was very bitter about her own father, believing he had a 'yellow streak' and reduced her worth to keeping the books and other menial tasks fit for a woman on a ship. Perhaps this explains the killers venom in sending the victim 'home to daddy' - a deep contempt for anyone who managed to get along with their father.
I'm not set on anything yet though. The above makes an interesting story but just typing it makes me wonder if this is all my own mental embellishment.

I decided to take a different take on this and wrote down what I thought were significant adjectives, verbs or adverbs in both the SK write ups. Some interesting items turned up.
Of course for barrel Squirrel Lips wins that round hands down ....ok maybe one hand down?
I scanned on 'sugar' from 'sugary sarcasm' and the only one there was Lilith
I scanned on peacock no hits
I scanned on echo and got Rosa
I scanned on broke as in "I feel so broke up" and I found Lilith again
but the one that jumped out at me was the scan on the word 'Thump' which takes place 3 times in the SK write up. It only appears in Nola's write up.
And so, I'm thinking it is quite possibly an unusual but good connection.
