R.A. Salvatore.
The man is a genius and his books blow away the Lord Of The Rings books imo.
Favorite Author!
Old old Stephen King. Everything before Gerald's Game where he went nuts. =(
Michael Crichton - his medical stories are awesome, the ones he wrote back in the 80's.
Larry Niven - I enjoy sci fi, but I dont get around to reading much of it. I do love this man's ARM stories though.

Orson Scott Card. I fell in love with his writing after reading his short fiction, and went on to read the Ender's Game series, all of his stand alone novels, and the Homecoming series.
I'm a little disappointed in the Ender's Shadow series, but one can't have everything.
George RR Martin. I don't care what anyone else says; this man can write. I have little patience for reading unfinished series, but his "Song of Ice and Fire" is too good to wait for them all to be out.
I keep hearing wonderful things about RA Salvatore
. I should check him out.
I also enjoy Stephen King, but prefer his sci fi-ish stuff to the straight horror. I think he did some good work after Gerald's Game, and look forward to finishing the Dark Tower series soon.
I mostly go by the book more than by the author though...I can't really say I'm a Philip Dick fan when I've only read two of his books, even though those two books blew me away, for example.

Exactly. I've only read a couple of Koontz books but I'm not a huge huge fan. Although his 'Lightning' book literally changed my life when I read it at 14. Actually inspired me to write my own fiction...granted not the kind I have posted here. /snort

Sorry Arth but I think Dan Brown is the most overrated author of all time. Every book he has written has the exact same plot and characters, he just changes names and settings. The villain is always the father/mentor figure, and the person who seems like the key villain is really a good guy. Once you read one Dan Brown book, you've pretty much read them all. The only reason he achieved the kind of fame he has is because The Da Vinci Code offended so many Christians, and there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Maybe I'm just spoiled, though. I have read George R.R. Martin's books, and they are absolutely outstanding and will make every fiction novel you ever read afterwards seem shallow and weak in comparison. I just wish he wrote faster, because I've been waiting for the 4th (of 6) book in his series for about a year and a half now. I'm worried he's going to die before he finishes the series and I'll never know how it ends.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the most innovated book of its time. When I read that, I was 13 and literally inspired me to read more books in hopes I would come across fantastic ones like that.
Plus it was funny as hell. =D

I've got two favorites tied for #1 in my heart, with two more nipping at their heels.
First is Mercedes Lackey and David Eddings.
Second place has to be Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. Only recently I've started reading their books (and listening to them on audiobooks), but I love 'em.

I have something in the neighborhood of 500 books in my house (maybe more), you're going to make me... PICK?!
in no particular order, for varying reasons, dependant on mood...
Stephen King - there were a few that were just ...weird, but in general, they're compelling, the style is unique
Dean Koontz - there's just something about these books...
Anne McCaffrey - dragons, Talents, Freedom, Acorna... all of'em
RA Salvatore - not just Drizzt, either
Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman - dragonlance & other non D&D stuff
Orson Scott Card
David Eddings
Terry Brooks (but not the shanarra books, never read them)
Anne Rice
Reality-ish stuff:
John Grisham
Robin Cook (Coma, anyone?)
and of course, kid stuff, Tolkien, CS Lewis & JK Rowling (harry potter!)

J.K. Rowling
Terry Goodkind
Christopher Paolini
I haven't read too many things, just the Harry Potter series, the Sword of Truth series, Eragon, and a few other books that I actually wanted to read. I tried reading through the Hobbit and got about half way, then I stopped to read Eragon and when I went back to the Hobbit, I couldn't stand how Tolkien wrote it, so i never finished it.

Tolkein (obviously)
Stephen King
Richard A. Knaak - The book that made the most impression on me as far as reading goes was The Legend of Huma, when I was really young. Somehow, it really left a mark, I couldn't put it down.
