I shot someone last night

I live in a house with 2 of my friends. In the middle of the night last night someone came in through our unlocked back door and tried to steal a computer that was in our living room. My puppy woke me up and i heard moving around. I grabbed my 9mm that i keep next to me and walked through the house not expecting to actually see anything.. I walked into the only entrance/exit to the living room and saw him trying to unplug the monitor. I cocked the gun and told him not to move. He saw me and broke for the door. I thought he was coming after me as I was standing in the doorway so I shot him in his right leg. We live next door to a cop and he was over there within about 30 seconds and the EMT/Police were there about 5 minutes after him. No real harm was done, he didnt bleed much and it was on hardwood so it was easy enough for them to clean up. I'm not really freaked out about getting robbed as I am about how easy it was for me to shoot someone. I shot him in the leg on purpose but kinda strange to think I could have killed him.

Why would you keep a 9mm next to your bed? Go on many under cover agent missions lately? You should've shot dude in the butt - but you know guy will sue you now - although he wouldn't have a 'LEG' to stand on.

OH come on, it was funny!

Wow!! I've always wondered if I'd be able to actually pull the trigger to defend myself in a case like that. It seems like it would be traumatic to shoot another person. But you gotta do what you gotta do. Probably adrenaline takes over and you just do what needs to be done regardless of any pre-attack opinions.

Roz...you're silly

Wow - thank god no one in your house was hurt! In the time it took that guy to get to your monitor and unplug it, I'd hate to think of what else could have been done. Are you going to lock your back door now?

I'm so glad you and your room mates are ok.

Don't worry if he sues you, he won't win. You have the right to defend your home, so long as the gun is legal.

You should really lock your door.

He was a junkie, and one of my best friend's dads is pretty much one of the most wealthy/powerful lawyers in the state. They already told my that I dont have anything to worry about legally, and I dont feel guilty about shooting him. I just feel strange about how easy it was. I keep a gun in my nightstand because we don't live in the best part of town. He had a knife on him, but I doubt he planned on doing anything to us.

How terribly frightning . I wonder how the situation would have played out if you didn't have a gun, but then I would hope you wouldn't confront a burgler directly with no way to defend yourself.

I have mixed feelings about using a gun to defend property but I can absolutely understand the need for self defense. I'm amazed, but glad, that you had the presence of mind to aim for the leg...I'm just putting myself in that situation and it only confirms my belief that I should not ever own a gun. I'm certain I would have 1. locked up or 2. killed him. But geez, I flake out on locking my back door -all the time-, or at least I used to back when I was smoking.

Ultimately...this is a terrible situation to contemplate. I think you did a remarkable job of taking the middle road between huddling up in a corner while someone violates your property and potentially does injury to yourself or your roomates, and offing a guy because he tried to take a monitor. It's terrible that you were in this position, but you act on the information you have with the tools at your disposal and I think that's all anyone can ask.

Anyway, I'm rambling...I'm just trying to reconcile my own tree hugging anti gun ways with your specific situation, which honestly in my opinion turned out to be...maybe not a best case scenario given what was going on, but better than my own hypotheticals. The clash of academics and reality, I suppose.

Bottom line, I'm very glad everyone is okay.

He's lucky it wasn't me with the gun because the first shot is the only hard one to do. One of the others through the rest of the clip probably would've killed him - I would've emptied it.

yikes!!! but hell if someone tried to rob my comp. i would of shot them too!!! lol

1.) This is exactly why I don't own a gun. It's beyond easy to pull the trigger.

2.) you have bad aim. Thats not even anywhere near the 10-spot. (Its a joke! Laugh!)

3,) I work in Marlow Heights MD. The ten square miles around me has the highest rate of violent crime in the US. I have a torque wrench handy at all times at work. I've had to pick it up only once so far...

You have shown more restraint then I would have by shooting him in the leg.
Vex 18 years ago
to think you actually hit him in the leg.

im a girl, probably woulda aimed for torso since its a bigger area to hit...

but im weird and contemplate how to kill people with the weirdest objects :P probably would've grabbed a toothpick and stuck it in his eye or something..
blazyn 18 years ago
the only reason why I aimed at his leg was because he was running straight at me, and I was confident I could hit him. Thanks for all the nice words..I'm back at my house tonight, and It's kinda strange, but I'm sure I'll be fine

Wow. Somewhere you must've had piece of mind telling you not to aim at bigger target areas.

We recently had a triple shooting in the apartment behind ours. Woman's old BF shows up with a shotgun and shoots em all in the head. All eventually died in the hospital... first one two days in and the last one yesterday.

Actually it depends on what state you are from. It is a bad Idea ever to tell someone you are aiming for the leg or 2ndly actualy aim for the leg. the only reason to ever fire a fire arm is to shoot to kill. I would suggest you lie about it and tell anyone who asks that you were afraid for you life you tried to kill him and missed.

Unless you live in texas ... then simply unload on him reload and put in a couple caps just to make sure.

In WA state we do not have the right to defend property with a fire arm. -- Kinda scary if you think about it.

I've talked to numerous cops about that very same situation, and they've all said if someone rushes you in you're house while trying to rob you, kill them. Not shoot them in the leg, kill them.

But glad to hear you and you're monitor are ok tho.

I live in Texas, and Like I said we're talking about a junkie that the cops on the scene recognized from having multiple run-ins with in someone's home against someone with no record (aside from driving with a suspended license that was removed). Not that it will matter, but going to a private high school and coaching at a private middle school has helped me to know several state judges, the mayor, the county rep, and dozens of lawyers. As far as legal recourse goes I'm not really worried
ROzbeans 18 years ago
Scary, he rushed you? Wow, in the face...full clip. That is, of course, if I had the saftey off. If not, I would've brained the fucker with a stapler after putting the gun down =x
blazyn 18 years ago
He rushed toward me, but I was blocking the only exit. I think he was going for the door moreso than for me.

lol I'm scared to keep a gun in the house
1. cuz of my kids,
2. cuz I'll kill a fucker ...
I've shot at someone before , stabbed a bitch with sissors, and beat a girl with a locker lock =/ I found it very easy to do =x ..
I have temper issues .. not so much anymore tho , thank gods! lol
But yeah , someone comes into my home you bet damn well I'll defend it /pats back
I'm glad to hear everyone is ok , and bravo for keeping a cool head and not just going postal on his ass lol
