Future Mafia Games

I was talking to Lemmy and we thought Lost and Heroes both would work really well.

With Lost you would have the survivors of the plane crash as the Townies. The Others as the mafia and the SK as a person who had been on the island from a previous crash who has gone a little nutty and thinks everyone should die.

Heroes, We could have the townies be people with abilities. The mafia being people with abilities rounding up dangerous people with abilities (which unfortunately goes awry) and the Serial Killer could be someone like Sylar who wants to take the abilities of everyone.

The Mafia would be three people infected by the Thing looking to bump off the Townies and facilitate the Thing's escape from the frozen iceshelf.

Ooooh you know, prob a bit too much a radical change in the rules to be practical for now, and may not even work, but this made me think of an interesting variation for this...

If at the start of the game there was only one Mafia Thing, and they chose who they wanted to turn into The Thing. He is therefore the Godfather for the entire game. Instead of a Mafia hit, the mods would write a scene detailing a run in with the Thing with clues pointing at who the Thing/s are. No Mafia hits, just a subversive conversion. Perhaps the Things would not only nominate who to convert, but who to convert them. They'd make this call based on who already had suspicions towards them... to dilute the evidence, or to get use out of a condemned thing and avoid evidence pointing at others for as long as possible.

The townies, i.e. research staff, would need to kill off all the Things, their numbers dwindling and more of their allies becoming enemies as the game goes on. Plus they would probably get an idea if they'd lynched an innocent man if they didn't turn into some crazy beast when they try and kill them.

Instead of a doctor you'd probably have some kind of bodyguard. Where they choose who to protect on a particular night, and if that person gets attacked by the thing then the Thing would be beaten back, giving clues as to one or more of the thing's identity, or even (given the attacker is nominated) killing off the thing.

Issue with this is, of course, that for every lynching, a townie would be converted, probably making it impossible for the townies to win unless the conversions happened only every other day. I'm new to Mafia so there are likely 100s of other problems with this :D But something to think about for a future future future game, as i'm sure there'll be a way to make the numbers work and make it fun.

lol -- yea, sure, just as I think I may be getting a tiny handle on the way the game is now...tiny mind you, there are still a lot of things I don't understand...you want to change it!

;)

Really though, that idea does sound kinda cool.

If you haven't read The Stand, and you are a reader... GO BUY THIS BOOK!! IMO, it's the best thing King put on paper. I've read it like seven times, and have it pegged for another read next week or so when I finish the 3 books I am currently reading...

Yeah, I know. But I'm impatient and if I leave one somewhere, I just start another...

Anyway, The Stand is a great book. Read it.

I read it whenever I get sick, because I'm morbid like that. My favorite part was everyone coming together in the aftermath of the flu - meeting all of these people and then seeing them go through this huge, life changing thing, what that did to their characters, how they made their choices, the leaps of faith they had to take, in both directions. So...kind of fitting for Mafia!

It is, isn't it? Very fitting. I'm surprised there hasn't been even one reference to MOON. "M-O-O-N that spells moon. Laws yes, everybody knows that. Even Tom Cullin knows that."

I really liked the escape from the city scenes. The realism there made me respect King so much more than I had for any of his other literary endeavors.

Oh yeah, 'specially the Lincoln Tunnel bit...I kind of liked how he did the parallel with Trashcan Man in...Utah, I think? Both Larry and Trashy had to go through tunnels and come out on the other side resolved to their cause.

Poor Trashy :\. His journey was actually very interesting to me (though I'll freely admit the part with The Kid squicked me a lot) in the sense that he was wandering through the desert and that made it feel more...epic, biblical even. I think I liked Nick and Tom's journey for much the same reasons - there's just something bigger about fighting the forces of Good and Evil and Nature all at once.

*thinks* I suppose we could have made it more referential than we did, as far as bringing out the 'inside jokes' and such from the book, but we understand that some people just want a general idea of the story so they can play whereas the readers like to get thrown a bone now and again....we tried to balance it out :). Also since anything and everything we say gets turned into clues we kind of have to be careful with that stuff *grins*

Yeah, I found Larry to be such an endearing character, and the irony of him finally deciding to grow up turned out so high in cost for the Good side... I mean, all he had to do was sleep with Nadine...but Nnnnooooo... He wanted to be true to his woman.

And of course Nadine hooked up with Harold...and well, you know what happened...

I think that's as good a description as I've ever heard. Epic, biblical... It certainly was. Nick Andros was my favorite character. I don't know why, just something about his determination I found very inspiring.

Yeah, you never know when an actual clue might accidently slip out, eh? *wink, wink*

Just remember these people haven't read the books so no real spoilers here, please. I think one of the things about Stephen King books that makes them work is that you never know what he might do and that can be ruined by an overzealous fan letting it all slip out ahead of time. ;)

Bag of Bones was his best :P The Stand was great - most of his other stuff I'm not a fan of
Verileah 19 years ago
*smiles* Nick Andros was my favorite too! And...hey we've got Stand discussion around here somewhere, I think I did chapter summaries for maybe half the book *grins*.

Edit - Here's the discussion thread, we can revive that if we want to hash out spoilers.

http://theangrycrayon.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7519

Edit again - I also really liked Bag of Bones. You might also like The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon, Vulash.

Also, who here has read the Dark Tower Books? I have them and...I'm honestly not sure they'll be worth the time it would take to read them. Help?

I've read them, well at least the first 4 or 5, and they seem to trail off pretty quickly... I think that plot line would have been better served as a novella or something. Not a novel...

I don't remember if I've read Bag of Bones... Honestly, I don't think I have...

After Gerald's game I stopped reading his books =( I'm an old school King fan and I'll reread those any chance I get. Unfortunately books are a part of my 'new entertainment' phobia O_o

i've gotten to the point where i tend to reread what i've already got or stick with authors i know. slipping into a new series has become to hit-and-miss and even if i really get into the first few books, they never seem to end... look at Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan - those have just gotten out of hand. and don't even get me started on Laurell K Hamilton. *shudder* whatever happpened to a good old fashioned trilogy?
Verileah 19 years ago
Heh, funny I get burned out on the same author's little quirks and constantly seek out new ones to mix it up.

My brother had me reading Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. I am on the library waiting list for the last one called Phantom (I think). It could be awesome. Lots of side stepping and surprise bad guys in there

I was thinking, and I'm sorry if this has been way too overused to be any interest to do, but something like Pirates o the Carribean may be a good one. Who doesn't like pirates backstabbing eachother? I really like the Terry Goodkind suggestions too. My sister read all of the books that she could get her hands on, and she absolutely adores them.

I've been thinking about hosting a Stargate mafia, unfortunately I doubt I'm qualified at all as a writer.
