Say Anything.
'Say Anything' is a John Cusak/Cameron Crowe 1989 teen flick. ' A noble underachiever and a beautiful valedictorian fall in love the summer before she goes off to college.' This is actually not what this thread is about, but the message is the same.
Actually no it isn't, I just like imdb.com and the title sounded interesting. /snort
This is not necessarily a vent thread - far from it. This is about saying anything - weather, the bird outside your work window, the fundamental differences between Mormons and catholics, how Law and Order Criminal Intent doesn't get the props it deserves, that I always forget whether it's 'it's' or 'its', that my daughter has a beautiful smile and the first guy that breaks her heart - I'm breaking his knees...it's about anything.
So, say anything.
We're thinking about getting the girls e-readers of some sort of Christmas maybe me and her could do some sort of stuff about books.
My sister painted the kitchen today WITHOUT WINDOWS OPEN. Not even a fan on - not til my dad and I got home.
I recently purchased a book called "The Social Success Workbook for Teens" for my daughter, who is on the autistic spectrum (diagnosed autism, but for the purposes of discussion some people might be more familiar with aspergers and that is very much like her symptom set). The book is designed to help teens with social skill related disabilities, but it's very interesting the way these skills are broken down. The first half of the book deals with learning to understand how others feel, and within that is understanding and dealing with how -you- feel. It doesn't even get into social rules, making friends, etc, until that foundation is built up.
Anyway, all that is to say that I wouldn't dismiss the bully movie/essay. I think understanding how others feel when they are bullies/being bullied is useful for any teen.
I really dont miss being a teen!
I really dont miss being a teen!
I miss the part where I could bend my knees without them hurting.
And yes, I would indeed like some cheese with that whine.
I miss the part where I could bend my knees without them hurting.
Ok, I agree, I miss that as well
Being able to rotate my left ankle correctly
Being able to eat almost anything (except peppers and Dominos)
For some reason I can rotate my ankles a freakish amount. I don't practice this; I guess I was born this way?
Are you sneaking Gaga in there?
A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"
The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:
"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.
Mermaids do not exist.
But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?
They would have no sex life and could not bear children.
Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.
And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?
Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.
At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.
We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?! "

Mike Hartmann No lady parts on a mermaid and whales smell like fish. :(

I thought this part was remarkably stupid, as well as hypocritical in a way. You want to accept being "fat" and be happy about it? Fine. That's wonderful. But don't then turn around and pretend you are not "fat" anyways. Denial and acceptance are mutually exclusive.
