Say Anything.

'Say Anything' is a John Cusak/Cameron Crowe 1989 teen flick. ' A noble underachiever and a beautiful valedictorian fall in love the summer before she goes off to college.' This is actually not what this thread is about, but the message is the same.

Actually no it isn't, I just like imdb.com and the title sounded interesting. /snort

This is not necessarily a vent thread - far from it. This is about saying anything - weather, the bird outside your work window, the fundamental differences between Mormons and catholics, how Law and Order Criminal Intent doesn't get the props it deserves, that I always forget whether it's 'it's' or 'its', that my daughter has a beautiful smile and the first guy that breaks her heart - I'm breaking his knees...it's about anything.

So, say anything.

Mike and I were at our agent's office last night and while chatting he used the word 'colored'.
Well, here's one for you. My cousins had some other American cousins visiting them during my stay here. They're half black. You should've seen their faces when they found out they have an Uncle N....r. Not only that, but one of the cousins we share is going to the University of the Philippines. He studies rocks. The name of that department is the National Institute for Geological Science (NIGS). Can you guess what their sports team is called?

I spent a long time lecturing my cousins' kids on why exactly they aren't allowed to use that word in America. Three of the kids (not black) actually live in Texas, so I had it at the top of my priority list to make sure they understood that they could get shot for tossing that word around like a prison salad.

See this always confuses me.

I am not a racist. Hell I dont give a toss what colour you are, you be nice to me, I be nice to you, no problemo. I work in a place where half my customers are foreigners, particularly Asian. Most of them are a pain in the ass to be honest, but some of them are very nice and I am happy to serve them. But the same applies to our white customers, we have some right assholes whom I wont give the time of day to, and some who are fine. I don't agree in stereotyping because of a colour/race/religion.

But! I find it hard to describe them. Like if I have to send another member of staff to help a customer, and I'm trying to describe who it is if they dont know the customer. I have got dodgy looks before for saying it's the Asian guy over there with the glasses on or whatever. I mean how am I supposed to physically describe someone if I'm gonna get shot down for saying what colour they are to narrow down the search a bit?

I'm guessing the people that give you dodgy looks are white? Probably afraid to offend someone. I don't know anyone that actually gets upset when using it to describe someone in a group of people like you mentioned. Most people are, and should be, proud of their ethnicity and you aren't using it in a derogatory or stereotyping manner. Maybe I'm not in a position to answer this question though

I agree with you Vulash. If you're describing a person by their obvious ethnicity, and aren't using derogatory words to do so, it should be perfectly fine. Sometimes in this day and age people are so concerned with being politically correct that they wind up making even bigger asses of themselves in trying not to be an ass in the first place. Sheesh, if you follow that logic it would seem you couldn't even identify the person as male or female, as that could be construed as gender biased! :P

I know a friend who worked in retail (walmart, iirc) who was spoken to for identifying another employee as 'the black lady by the photo counter' to a customer. I think he was told to stick with things like clothing color. *shrugs*

I referred to myself as 'the brown girl from Alaska' at our annual convention with work.

All the employee would be wearing uniforms though. I guess I just don't see the need to overly complicate things

"I guess I just don't see the need to overly complicate things "

Anyone that knows me knows this isn't true - heh. I just found humor in ME saying that.

I'm usually 'that tall girl'. Which doesn't make me feel like a giant freak of nature at all.

Oh I'm the 'lunatic' at work. Or psycho bitch. Or something along those lines...for some reason the men are all scared of me :(

It's so quiet in my house right now. Both kids are napping. There's no baby crying, no Halo3 blaring on the TV, no Fairly Odd Parents, no giggly baby spitting up. Just the sound of my fingers typing and my ipod blaring in my ear.

Awesome sauce.
