Interesting question about usage

Now, I love Rion Vernon and his site www.pinuptoons.com I had a gift made for me from an artist on NS that used his pinup girls as a base. He was credited fully and she took no credit, other than the paint over. I thought they were SO CUTE so I did this.

I was uber proud. Was the first time I did anything like that. I wanted to do LOTS more. But it blew up. Like...really bad. Ultimately NS banned us from using any of RV's bases, at least there. So that brings me to my next question.

Would anyone be offended or disgusted or perplexed if I allowed this on my board? I still would want y'all to credit him fully and obviously dont use my board to gain financially from it. I dont want to offend anyone and I dont want anyway to leave because of it.

So, what say you?

LOL I guess I should clarify. Yes, if I was involved at the time, I'd probably have to show them my pimphand, but it's in the past and we should all just hold hands and have a chai latte.

OK this board needs better help. WTH is my chai latte?

There's only one admin over there I'd like to drop kick but she quit, so yay. I don't participate anymore for the same reason, Mae.

I'm sorry, guys. :( I hope I didn't offend. (I wear Degree!)

I promise that if I start being a bitchy mod-type person, you can PM me to quit being bitchy or you'll have to show me your pimphand.

I'm seriously hurt and offended. Please don a pink tutu to compensate.

I love Tiime. =D NS is a separate entity from us here and although I enjoy it still and is resourceful, shouldnt be compared. More power to them...moving on.

Sorry to hear you got banned. I've used copyrighted material in the freestyle section. Technically, I shouldn't, but it's not like I'm out for profit. Nothing but class projects.

Copyrights can be stupid. Yes, an artist is entitled to his intellectual property, but in the end, it's about money. I'm not diverting funds with my photoshop collages.

And I don't buy into that bs about stealing someone's soul. Sounds like psychobabble to me. We all leech off each other's ideas at some point or another. We can't invent art from scratch, hence the collapse of modernism.

It all comes down to legal rights. The creator of the original work owns the rights to it and it's up to them how it can be used (except for situations when someone buys the rights, but that's a whole other issue). NS was trying to avoid legal problems, but what they neglected to acknowledge was that the artist gave permission. It's human nature to make mistakes though so I won't get my panties in a bunch about it.

Yeah I know. I have a photo album online containing several hundred pictures. Up to me how they can be used, but why I should I care if someone redistributes them for non-lucrative purposes?

I understand copyright laws, but I'm questioning the anal retentiveness behind certain artists. Why go postal when their work is being used for academic purposes? Had to write my share of essays, and foot/endnotes were necessary. Direct quotes if you will. But these "direct quotes" are forbidden in visual arts. Kinda hypocritical imo.

Mae, just so you're aware...this information is being passed around a lot of forums...especially the dolling forums I frequent. This is Rion Vernon's wishes. So us as fellow artsists, yea I think we should respect it.

Remember how pist you were when that jerk re-edited the magelo you made for Triadica. Now think how that felt times x1000. Case in point, there's about a dozen doll artists out there have made doll bases from his line work. All they did was pixel trace his linework, shaded it pretty and then offer it on their site...yea they credit Rion for the inspiration but thats it.

Back in the day, the only doller/artist that was allowed to use his linework for inspiration was Dhaling. She was the only one that actually wrote him asking for permission. But people stopped asking and just started doing it.

So he finally got fed up and just made it standard across the board. If you want to use his work, you have to purchase a license.

Also realize, that since he's done this...anyone using his work illegaly can be sued for copyright.

No one, especially myself as the owner of this site, condones the violation of an artists copyright of their work. We are well within the limits of Rion Veron's wishes. Nothing is being used for profit or being claimed as their own. He is credited.

I dont know what information you're referring to, but please dont assume I'm ignoring obvious legal issues.

There was some sort of news release from his site, 2 weeks ago...all of the dolling forums have made using his bases illegal, which is why NS is following suite. I'll find the link in a sec.
Laney 21 years ago
Also, not saying that you or anyone else is ganking his work. Even if you're crediting him for the artwork. He never intended for his artwork to be used in the way it is now.

BRB with that link!
ROzbeans 21 years ago
Doh, i edited my post, please reread it, Laney.
ROzbeans 21 years ago
Laney if you find that link, then yes I will prohibit the use of Rion Vernon's altered work in sigs on this site. If you can't, then I'm going with what I know and my understanding is that we're within the legal boundries.
