McCain picks AK governer Sarah Palin - wha?!

Holy shit.

We had heard rumors about Palin being asked to be VP earlier in the year when we were still in alaska, but it was SO far fetched that it was just a giggly thing to say.

She was Wasilla's MAYOR 3 years ago. She's the youngest governor at 44 and AK's first female gov. She has a high approval rating and people in AK think she's the hottest thing since Baywatch. People LOVE her cute hair style and her glasses. Seriously, she's really well liked there.

HOLY SHIT!

I really do think that McCain shot himself in the foot. He's 72, she's 44 and an unknown and washington outsider. She just squirted out her 5th kid, too and no one knew she was pregnant until she was 7 months pregnant. They said she was out like 2 days or some ridiculously short amount after having her 4th and was back to work.

There is also some drama - she recently fired Anchorage's sheriff (or some police guy) for not firing a police man who had incidently been married to her sister (or in law). Her son, who is in the Army, was recently stationed at Ft Wainwright in AK instead of going into Iraq as well. Just murmurings but stuff that will undoubtedly come up.

Yeah I think she's got incredible potential but it's WAY too early in her career. I really do think McCain just picked a woman because Obama didn't.

Alaska Daily News hasn't even reported it yet. How sad is that? =x

I dunno...seems a lot of people didn't want Romney, and think Palin will give McCain somewhat of a boost. Apparently she's becoming known, fast, and seems to be generating a lot of good comments.

Like everyone says...this year's elections are going to be a doozy.

Very much a doozy! It blew my mind that he picked her. She is seriously very well liked in AK. Maybe he's hoping to carry her approval rating over? Gonna be a close close race, I think.

I'd hit it.

Mike was looking somewhere online and she was rated one of the hottest political female figures out there. Apparently it's those glasses.

So you and about a million other guys.

Well she was runner up to Miss Alaska in 1984!

McCain decided he's not gonna go slumming with interns, he'll go right next door to the veep's office if he wants a piece. Ouch, that was mean. *smacks self*

Honestly my first thought was they're hoping to get all of Hillary's supporters to cross the bridge with this one. And I can see all of the supporters who wanted Hill just because she's a woman doing just that!

The thought occurred to me.. I admit it..

Only problem is the differences between them. Just because they're both women is a pretty pitiful reason to vote for them.
As much as I disliked Clinton, at least she was pro-choice. Palin only sanctions abortion in the event of possible death to the mother. Rape...incest...nope, no go, and that's just wrong.
Temprah 16 years ago
I agree Den. The initial reaction when I heard was oh wow a woman! ok maybe I could vote republi... wait... wtf am i THINKING.

I do firmly believe McCain / the Repubs picked a woman for specifically targeting all of the disgruntled / furious / disgusted and betrayed feeling women democrats.. the goal is to split the party and get all the votes they can. They picked one who fits the core values McCain is going for yes.. but a woman.

It is going to be one hell of a historical inauguration no matter which party wins.

oh and another thing.. Roz, she is young with very little political experience. That doesn;t mean crap. America elected a PRESIDENT whose nly experience was being governor of a lil state called Texas... oh yeah and whose Daddy had been one too.

People have proven to be stupid enough to do that kind of crap. I didn;t vote for Jr for governor, or for president.. But I like experience. Frustrating thing is Obama doesn't have a lot of it himself. Doubly frustrating is that Obama didn't think to appease/satisfy half of his own party by choosing a woman for VP himself.

<-- Rep

Im all for pro choice.. I think we should have that right.. but when weighed against everything else, Id still vote republican.. McCain is about as dem as they get though unfortunately.

Anywho, if I remember correctly ( from gradeschool) you only really need to be over 35 and a born citizen to be able to become pres hehe,

I do like that he picked her cause shes pretty much out of the washington loop, with no ties and no strings and no chance to have been bought or corrupted in any way, and I think thats as much a reason as any that he chose her, shes fresh and shes strong willed and is willing to fight against odds to do what she feels needs to be done.. so kudos to him for that.. and her. I mean, if you want someone like that.. shes prolly the best, if not only, choice. Oh and shes woman, and young, and healthy, and when youre a 72 year old man whos battled cancer, you cant pick another old man to be at your side.. you need something healthy.

The thing that really really bothers me is this notion that children should be allowed to get abortions without parental consent. If one of my children were in that position it would be a choice that they need guidance on, and not from their peers that are as clueless, but from their parents. The government, either/both sides, need to stop taking away my rights to parent my child how I see fit. Unless I am abusing my child the government needs to go right ahead and fuck off. Abortion is something that grown women struggle with, the choice, the long term mental health issues, etc. how in the hell is a teenager supposed to make such a decision? It's scary to me. Very scary. I think parents need to send a strong message to the people in charge to stop taking away our rights as parents.

I really don't think McCain has a chance in hell of winning but we will see.
Masoyama 16 years ago
I didn't either, BUT

I think that there are more white women out there who want to have the first woman president in office more than they want to be forgiven for their sins of there forefathers.

No matter what anyone says about old man McCain .. he certainly has balls and understands how to run a campaign.

The dems will not even mention to her that she has no experience.

And to boot if McCain dies we would have a woman president!!!

QFT! As long as a child is under my care/responsibility, I want to know everything going on with their health, etc. BC, and abortion are both medical issues that carry risks, and if my child is going to be subjected to those risks I want to know about it, and weigh those risks for them...that is a huge part of parenting!

/tries to right train derail!

There is a lot of talk about McCain choosing Palin in hopes that her ovaries will sway the female vote that Hillary carried. Personally I find that insulting and so do my ovaries.

The thing that makes me nervous is - what if McCain dies? How hypocritical are they being blasting Obama for being inexperienced when his choice of VP, and successor if he dies, has less experience? I've been to Wasilla, where she was mayor, they have a great quiznos but come on, it has about... what 10k people? I lived in Anchorage - I think she's doing a decent job there, considering who she beat out to win the Gov position. I'll have to google and copy/paste the previous idiot fucker who was Gov.

I think if she ran for the vacating senate position that Ted Stevens will be leaving open if/when they convict him for corruption, that would be a better progression for her politically. Jumping from Mayor of a small town, to Governor for 2 years to VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES is a jump I'm not willing to live with.

Whether this is true or not, I hope Bristol is strong enough to handle all this publicity.

If it is true, I admire her parents for what they're doing. Not believing in abortion, and wanting to give Bristol another chance at making her own life, that her parents did this only shows me they are exceptional parents. Trying to raise a child at her age, and finish school, etc., it nearly impossible, but a child with Down's is unfathomable. Trying to keep the matter quiet at all costs goes along with that.

If it isn't true then those who are perpetuating the story should be shamed. Until or unless it is proven, I personally don't think it needs to be a topic for discussion, but that's not going to happen, obviously.

Lol, did she really do that?
