Dragon Age: Origins

Anyone play this yet? (is it even out) and if its not out, anyone gonna play it?

Looks pretty awesome.

Cool, I found it. I still had the dvd cover for the game (surprisingly enough, seriously I lose everything) and it still had the Shale paperwork in there. So I just redeemed him! Thanks though!

Shale is supposed to be free with your copy of the game. Go to Sulcher's Pass on the left side of your map and accept the quest from the guy there. And then a new town will appear on your map and you go there. If you don't have Shale installed, check your game to see if there's a code you didn't enter. If you do not have a code, let me know. I have an extra Shale code that's going to waste (husband and I were originally sharing one CD so I paid for the separate download. Decided to buy my own CD later on and thus the code that came with the game is going to waste, atm.)

I read a really good tip on how to keep Ser Otto alive when I had trouble doing this at first. It's sorta mean to do this to a blind guy, but it's all in the name of keeping him alive. Turn off auto-follow and move your group individually. (Yes, this is a pain, but go with me.) Be sure to close the doors behind you so he can't follow you though them. If you are on autofollow mode and start fighting, he'll go through the doors and join you. So turn it off. Just leave him behind. He'll magically rejoin you when you trigger video confrontations with the demon.

And later on, when I got better at playing the game, I used my mage to cast force field on Ser Otto. This immobilized him, prevented him from attacking or getting any damage back, for the majority of the fight. And my healer would watch his health and heal him when necessary. But the force field was my way of making sure he wasn't running off on his own or getting too much aggro.

Thank you much for the links!

I am rather liking your idea, Beli, of starting over just for story purposes and for the expansion. On my first character, the mage, I was doing all sorts of crazy stuff because it was a new game to me. I may have to start anew for story/expansion.

As for Flemeth, I killed her. And I was like o_O oh crap when I saw her for the first time. lol
Yeah, I have quite a few characters that I regret. I won't go crazy with having like 5 characters ready for the expansion since ME2 is out next week and I want to try out new romances. I will want to take my dwarf and maybe one elf into the expansion. See how the expansion plays out before I kill myself with more playthroughs.

The good thing about playing early is that I've gotten all the "ooh shiny" reactions out of my system. I was always rushing to the next big thing because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Now I am actually stopping to take screenshots of my character in battle. I regret not doing this earlier, but now I know better. I've installed mods to remove the rings around the characters' feet, turned off the spell glowy effects from sustained abilities, and such, in pursuit of capturing that ever elusive heroic screenshot. ;)

These are pretty amazing shots, Beli! Especially that first one! The angle and the fire is just amazing! Excellent job!

It would be awesome if you could provide a list off mods you used. Did you use any of the improved quality textures?
Vulash 16 years ago
Beli you keep saying your Dwarf - what class is she? It looks like a dual wielding fighter. i've been debating making a fighter, but I don't know what I want to do with it. It would seem dual wield rogues do more damage, and dual wield fighters aren't set up to tank as well - so what role do you go? Aesthetically I like the thought so I'm just trying to figure out how to go about it.
Beli 16 years ago
I'll update with a list of mods I'm using once I find the links that go with them.

And she's a dual wielding warrior. I already played a shield tank and liked it, but I felt that was really Alistair's role so I tried out the dual wielding tree and wore medium armor so I'd have more stamina for my moves. I find the dual wielding a lot more fun than the two-handed tree. I have seen "well, if you're gonna dual wield, might as well do it on a rogue" arguments on boards, but my warrior is dual wielding full size weapons (a pair of axes or swords, depending) rather than daggers, which is where rogues shine. I put 36 points in dexterity to unlock all the talents and the rest into strength (while rogues focus on cunning). I don't know if my damage output is as high as a rogue's would be, but I feel take down my opponents quickly enough and I like being able to wear heavier armor. The only thing that I miss from the shield/2 handed weapon trees are the abilities that prevent you from being knocked back. Loghain kept knocking me flat on my ass during the duel. I managed to beat him, but I marveled at how many times he could shield bash me down. Another perk to being a dual wielding warrior over rogue is that I have access to templar spells, which I found very handy.

I'm also keeping my options open because they've said that they're going to allow you to respec in the expansion as well as acquire new abilities. If I need to go back to being a sword and board tank, my warrior is ready for it. If I have a player in my group that can do the tanking job, I'm happy to downshift and be the dps tank instead. I just like the warrior class more than the rogue class.

The only tree I did not try out on the warrior was the archery one. That just seems better suited for ranger/bard, but I'd have to google and see what others say first.

Thanks I've been wanting to try it for awhile, but didn't know if it was fun or worthwhile - I don't have a lot of time to play so now that I've beaten it I try to be selective. I think I like the look of a dwarven dual wielder better than my rogue, but the rogue is fun too.

So when is this expansion? I haven't planned any characters with that in mind.

Mods I am using:

1. Circles Be Gone - removes the circles underneath the feet. You can still see your target though. If you look at my screenshots, you can see small red triangles on the ground that indicates who I am attacking. It's much more subtle.

2. Personal Annoyance Remover - removes most of the visual effects from sustained abilities.

3. White Teeth - no more nasty brown teeth in the game. /shudder

4. Pineappletree's Vibrant Colors - just more options for hair colors and eye colors, etc. I especially recommend the eye color ones because it affects the NPCs in the game and you can see them much better. Gives them more warmth.

5. More Hairstyles - I'm not a fan of anime hairstyles, which is basically the bulk of this mod, but this is worth keeping an eye on because the author is constantly adding new hairstyles, including the two new supermodel ones linked in this thread. If you wanted Morrigan's hair or the hair from the Lady in the Forest, it's also included in this package.

6. Better Sex Cutscenes - This is an alternative to the vanilla sex scenes that come with the game. The author has created more intimate animations that will trigger any time you invite a member to your tent. If you use this mod alone, the characters will still be wearing their default underwear and you will still get the gist of what they're doing.

7. Natural Bodies - removes the underwear and adds sexual organs to the NPCs. Works very well with "Better Sex Cutscenes." If nudity offends, don't download this mod, simple. And if you install this mod, you generally need to be more careful when playing the game. Sometimes I forget I have this mod at all until Flemeth rescues me from the Tower of Ishal and I'm standing in front of Morrigan stark naked. Sometimes when I rescue prisoners from Arl Howe's dungeon, they're talking to me with a massive boner. Kind of jarring, heh. So I have to be aware of where I am at in the game and to make sure my kid is not in the room. I can just move the whole folder out of the "override" directory to be safe and put it back later.

I am not using any other mods. I did see some mods where textures are "improved," but I haven't decided if I want to go that far. Would it slow down my game with all the extra quality? Dunno.

Oh SNAP!

First I spared Loghain and Allistair had a FIT and left for good. So I went back and decided to kill Loghain to which Allistair hemmed and hawed like a girl and almost talked himself out of being king. What a weanie, I gotta harden him the next time. I managed to get him and Anora married, much to his displeasure. However, Zevran is like 97 approval with me so I gots my nookie on the side, still. I told Allistair I'd stay and help him though. What a puss.
Vulash 16 years ago
Someone explain the hardening - I've read a little about it, but I don't totally understand it.
Beli 16 years ago
To harden Alistair, do his personal quest (see Goldana in Denerem). Once you are finished talking to her and leave, Alistair will talk to you about what happened. You must pick the line, "Everyone is out for themselves. You should learn that." Do NOT follow up with "That's not what I meant. Don't do that!" as that will reverse the hardening.

The benefits of hardening Alistair are described here:

Whether or not Alistair's personality is hardened can affect the game in a number of ways:

  • In The Pearl in Denerim, there is a woman named Isabela who is acquainted with Zevran. If you are in a romance with Alistair and bring him to The Pearl, and you have hardened Alistair’s personality, he will join you in a threesome if you choose that in her conversation choices.

  • If Alistair's personality is hardened and The Warden is not a human noble and is in a romance with him, then Alistair can be persuaded to remain their lover after becoming king at The Landsmeet (otherwise he will end the relationship after becoming king). This is the case even if Alistair is to marry Anora.

  • Alistair's attitude towards becoming king will be more positive (or at least his attitude to Anora becoming queen will be more negative) if his personality is hardened.

  • If The Warden is male, and a "hardened" Alistair is chosen as the champion to fight Loghain at The Landsmeet and has not agreed to marry Anora, then Alistair will assume the throne without further input from The Warden.

  • Alistair will still marry Anora and become king if Loghain lives as long as they had previously agreed to marry and Alistair's personality has been hardened. Otherwise, Alistair will leave for good, if allowed to live. (Note that Alistair will still leave The Warden's party if Loghain lives, but if he becomes king will be around during the Epilogue.)

To harden Leliana, talk to her in camp after you finish confronting Marjoline (doesn't matter if she lives or dies). You need to convince Leliana she's just like Marjoline and to admit to herself she is a natural killer.

Benefits of hardening Leliana:

"Hardened" Leliana will no longer object to some of the morally ambiguous choices made by the Warden (such as defiling the Sacred Ashes), will be less judgmental of Morrigan, and will have different ending epilogues available.

IIRC, she'll also be open to a threesome or foursome (if Zev is coming along) at the Pearl.

I need a break from this game. I managed to raise my approval with Zevran to like 99 percent, without even sleeping with dude. Allistair agreed to marry Anora and became King (before the blight fight), then he ended things. I went back and broke up with Zevran and Allistair STILL broke up with me because of him. I totally got up =/ I'm too into this game lol.
KaAnna 16 years ago
It is so very easy to do, Roz. So very easy to do.
Beli 16 years ago
Aww, Roz. =/ <3

The game upsetted me enough on my first playthrough that I didn't play again for days. Gave the CD back to my husband and told him I was done. I don't know why I came back. Couldn't stop thinking about the game, which is a testimony to how good it was. I can't tell you how many spoiler threads I read, hoping someone found a secret happy ever after ending with Alistair. Otherwise playing this game was like watching the Titanic. There's just no way to avoid that iceberg in the end!

When you play again, give Zevran a try. He often gets overlooked because he comes in so late in the game, but when you focus entirely on him, you can actually see the relationship grow and him falling in love with you. You get even better dialogue options if you turn down the earring he offers you the first time because it forces him to open up a little more before he offers it to you again in camp. This guy is completely devoted to you. There are going to be a lot of upset Zevran fans if he's somehow not available in the expansion. I hate BioWare for not giving any info on romances. They just don't release that info so we have to drive ourselves crazy, wondering.
ROzbeans 16 years ago
I have zero dialogue with zevran now. I haven't tried to go back to the camp, just figured we couldn't because we were at Eamon's estate in Denerium. I got the shale code and I was going to go do that quest before Allistair broke my fucking heart. /cry

I need a couple days off from that game. Gonna wow it up and try and forget. /gets weepy

For a happily ever after ending with Alistair, can't you:

1.) Roll a Human Noble
2.) Harden Alistair
3.) Spare Loghain
4.) Deny Morrigan
5.) Marry Alistair and become Queen

???
Beli 16 years ago
Nope. Alistair and Loghain is an either/or situation. Alistair will leave your party no matter what, hardened or not, if you spare Loghain. You can harden Alistair, talk him into marrying Anora, and spare Loghain, but from what I understand, he will still marry Anora and have nothing to do with you. He will not come along with Loghain to the final battle. He should still be there after the ceremony to talk to you though, but I have no idea what he says.

You basically have to:

1) roll human noble
2) harden Alistair is optional
3) Kill Loghain
4) Crown Alistair and declare yourself queen
5) Agree to ritual
6) Ta dah

BUT!!! I would like to point out that this is only the game. How would this carry out in the expansion? Would someone have to stay behind and rule the throne while the other leads the Grey Wardens? Just because this appears to be a happy ending does not make it so. In fact, Duncan would probably argue that a Grey Warden's duty is to the Blight and has no business being on the throne.

The next best happy ending (available to all races) is to make Anora queen and to reform the Grey Wardens with Alistair.

The big flaw in the whole thing is that #1 -- having to be a human noble. Fuck that. =p

I will give Alistair credit for one thing and this is sweet irony if you think about it -- for all the hardening we do for Alistair, he's hardened us women in return. There are a lot of women, especially elves, who had their nasty shock on the first playthrough. I hear that if an elf makes him king, he breaks up with them and calls them a lowborn or something. =/ Ouch.
KaAnna 16 years ago
You can't spare Loghain. Alistair throws a fit and leaves you for good, I believe.

And oh, man. I'm glad I didn't accidentally harden Alistair on my first playthrough. I would be so heartbroken if he called my elf a lowborn. Yeesh.
Vulash 16 years ago
As much as I enjoy the game I haven't gotten emotionally attached at all - bit of a surprise reading ya'lls responses
