Say Anything.
'Say Anything' is a John Cusak/Cameron Crowe 1989 teen flick. ' A noble underachiever and a beautiful valedictorian fall in love the summer before she goes off to college.' This is actually not what this thread is about, but the message is the same.
Actually no it isn't, I just like imdb.com and the title sounded interesting. /snort
This is not necessarily a vent thread - far from it. This is about saying anything - weather, the bird outside your work window, the fundamental differences between Mormons and catholics, how Law and Order Criminal Intent doesn't get the props it deserves, that I always forget whether it's 'it's' or 'its', that my daughter has a beautiful smile and the first guy that breaks her heart - I'm breaking his knees...it's about anything.
So, say anything.
Oh look, something shiny!
that my daughter has a beautiful smile and the first guy that breaks her heart - I'm breaking his knees...it's about anything.
Knees?
Aim higher.
It's kinda distracting to eat a very hot chicken sandwich while trying to keep your eyes out of the cleavage abyss of the hot blonde next to you.
the fundamental differences between Mormons and catholics
Don't know much about Catholicsism (sp?), but I know far more than I ever wanted about Mor(m)onism
Anyone wanna compare with me?
but I got about 8 inches of my hair whacked off today. I'm happy, relieved, bouncy, cooler and sad all at the same time. At least I won't be closing it in the car door anymore (hopefully hehe).
Again, from what I understand, when you go through the temple you make pretty clear and specific promises that you're going to pledge everything you have to the church. I don't think Catholics have something similar, though I can see how people might be concerned about a pope telling the president what to do. I also get the impression that there is much more room for dissent (without getting excommunicated) within the Catholic Church...though I might be confused on that.
There's a presidential candidate that is Mormon. Read an article discussing the issues that could arise from potentially judging a man's character because he thinks the garden of Eden is in montana. Does that matter? This man's going to be sitting in the oval office - can you compare being mormon to being a catholic like JFK or being jewish and running for president? Can they compare?
It's Missouri, not Montana
As for the Mormon president thing, I think the biggest comparison I can think of is this:
As a general rule, *most* catholics go to church on sunday, might read the bible, and occationally attend other functions. But their entire life doesn't revolve around Catholicsm.
Mormons on the other hand, their entire lives *completely* revolve around Mormonism. Every decision that is made, is made based on how it would effect their chances of getting into the "Celestial Kingdom" (the mormon version of Heaven)
Girls, starting at a young age, are taught about domestic stuff, housecleaning, Children, & the like. They're pretty much taught that there's no way to get in heaven, without being Married (in the temple) to a "priesthood holding" man. Males are taught that Women are beneith them, and should abide their rules.
Mormons attend church for 3 hours every sunday , as well as several other activities during the week.
Unlike every other religion, the Mormon leaders are *not* trained. The Bishop (leader of each ward (congregation)) is "called" to that position by higher up's, based on who "god tells them is worthy"
Every year, the youth have to have what is called a "worthiness interview" with the bishop. During this, the bishop asks *VERY* personal questions. Imagine, a grown man (that's not a parent) asking a teenage girl or boy about their sex life.
In order to leave the church, you have to send a "letter of resignation" to Salt lake. Otherwise, your ward will harass you to no end to get you to come back to church.
They have a center in Utah, where they have a ton of people searching public records for non attending members who have moved & such to find them.
The Mormons are also the *ONLY* church that does not release their financial records to the public. If you want to be considered a full fledged member in good standing you *have* to pay tithing (10% of your income before taxes & stuff)
They have their members clean the chapel's, because supposedly there isn't enough money in the church to hire people.... But the Mormon church is building a 2 billion+ mall in Downtown salt lake (exmormon.org article on that)
This is just the tip of the iceberg, there's so much other weirdness, & craziness it's not even funny.
Besides.. who would want a president who was a member of a church that was founded by a Convicted con man/charlatin, who supposedly translated the "golden plates" (into the book of mormon) by looking into a fucking HAT? (see Mormon south park episode, it's accurate according to what the church teaches)
I also get the impression that there is much more room for dissent (without getting excommunicated) within the Catholic Church...though I might be confused on that.
There's pretty much no room for dissent. (unless of course, you make *tons* of money)
The process for excommunication is pretty one sided. The Leaders (or Elders as they're called) will hold what's called "a court of love", where you basically come by yourself, you're presented with the "Evidence" of your sins, you don't really get a chance to defend yourself, then they boot you out of teh room, & "decide your fate".
Ok that's freaking me out. No disrespect but...wow.
None taken hun! It's a fucking cult as far as I'm concerned.
She fell from a ladder at work, broke her neck..and was dealing with her own medical bills and the costs of her husbands bills he had left behind as well as whatever it costs to live on north shore Oahu.. couldnt pay her tithe so the work and her friends all pretty much shunned her. Wouldnt help her with anything or would flat out refuse her. Hehe that was the end of the church for her.
My husband hated it growing up, he calls them a cult.., not to mention you arent allowed to drink alcohol ( i think) or caffeine!
Anyway I definately don't believe everything they believe - but I do respect that if they are giong to believe something, they don't half ass it like so many others do. "Well I do believe when it tells me that, but....." and then rationalize why they can only do that in moderation.
I had no idea what an add ass was :P
On the subject I think some of the people that frequent the boards are mormons and this is getting kind of heated towards them - I'm just nicely saying lets not make people feel too uncomfortable
We bought a house in missouri.. very near Zion and surrounded by good catholics Amish and Mormons.. hehe im accepting of other people.. though I dont expect them to accept me.
