Say Anything.
'Say Anything' is a John Cusak/Cameron Crowe 1989 teen flick. ' A noble underachiever and a beautiful valedictorian fall in love the summer before she goes off to college.' This is actually not what this thread is about, but the message is the same.
Actually no it isn't, I just like imdb.com and the title sounded interesting. /snort
This is not necessarily a vent thread - far from it. This is about saying anything - weather, the bird outside your work window, the fundamental differences between Mormons and catholics, how Law and Order Criminal Intent doesn't get the props it deserves, that I always forget whether it's 'it's' or 'its', that my daughter has a beautiful smile and the first guy that breaks her heart - I'm breaking his knees...it's about anything.
So, say anything.
Its not me saying it - Its all of these gaming websites.
Lessa the 1800 has gone through a timeframe when Nvidia was disputably superior so the nvidia card you are referencing must be a lower end one, or a bunk one, if that is the case. The 9800 series is better than anything pre 4xxxx for ATI.
So yeah, but its still a vast improvement over my old old computer, and doesnt crash, so its enough to keep me content.. at least til christmas when I start begging for some memory..
Ok I looked it up Kele and it appears you're right - at least as far as the end of 2009/beginning of 2010, but they flop back and forth enough that I'm not sold that has any lasting meaning.

Well dont forget - People will also buy what they feel comfortable with. If someone has been Nvidia fans all along, then they'll stick with Nvidia (no matter how well ATI is doing) and vice versa.
My current computer has a middle end ATI card in it and ive had zero issues.
Also, ive read many reports that ATI cards generally run cooler than Nvidia cards do.
I've been debating that actually, but it leaves me high and dry at conferences and during presentations. I was considering getting a nice monitor for my desk and just plugging my (monster) laptop in for 80% of my work. Will the laptop not do that efficiently?
How much time spent will be in front of audiences and at conferences? For serious work, you need a serious computer. You aren't going to be modelling during presentations and conferences so limiting yourself for maybe that 1% of your time you have your computer not doing its purpose ( 3d/graphics )... doesnt seem like a good investment!!
Netbooks are dirt cheap. can spend $399 on a -new- presentation box to lug around to conferences and whatnot.
I just pick up whatever's at Wal-Mart. :teehee
I C WUT U DEED THUR!

Yea you've really got a good point. I don't know how often I'll need the power either though - I think I'm just convincing myself I'll need it more than I do because I'm a power fiend. Most of my work will be basic powerpoint, writing, emails, basic figures, downloading PDFs, etc. There will be some basic programming and modeling at times, but the intensive stuff would be semi rare I think. Also if I need to do any extensive modeling I'm sure I can work out a deal to get access, or build, a powerful PC at the time.
Is mac-power > pc-power? Does an apple desktop with 4G ram compare favorably to a PC with 8G ram?
Here's my experience...
PS CS4 on Mac & PC.
10 .png files about 1200x1500 on the PC desktop
Run the automated batch files to layers on PC = about 2 minutes to complete
Run the automated batch files to layers on Mac ( over network ) = about 30 seconds
PC was 3.0ghz Core 2 Duo 4 GB ram
Mac was 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo 4 GB ram
both 32 bit applications / systems.
Sure you can spend $4k on a PC, but it runs windows, and therein lies the problem.

I use ASIO audio drivers and you can't tell the difference between my computers or a Mac. A computer generating a whatever-kHz tone is a computer generating a whatever-kHz tone. The shitty Direct Sound drivers are clunky and slow and suck. On my laptop using my "Primary Sound Driver" (I guess this is Direct Sound or some garbage that came with the sound card) I have to set a HUGE buffer (like 200+ ms) to prevent underruns with even the barest of tracks. With ASIO drivers I'm at like 15 ms. I'm guessing it's the same case with Windows: shitty generic all-purpose drivers.
not with mac. plug it in, turn it on, type in your name, password, select your country and hit go. tada. computer is going.
Everything on and in a mac is made for a mac by apple or apple certified specialists. you're not gonna get BSOD for installing beta drivers to try and tweak your already poor performing game. or whatever it is you do. Programs are less buggy too because its got a LOT less shit to deal with when interacting with the OS.
my mom and sister and few PC users i know. their desktop has like 20 'optimizing' & 'defragging' and virus removal programs there. Its retarded lol. All i got on mine is my WIP files and movies/shows to watch.
Poser crapped out on me today and I don't know why. It worked fine last night when I shut everything down, and now its telling me it cant find some exe or directory or some crap. I think I have to reinstall. *grumble*
